Large-format live concerts are proving to be significant economic drivers in India. Diljit Dosanjh's recent tour generated an estimated Rs 943 crore, boosting tourism, hospitality, and allied sectors. Similarly, Coldplay's Ahmedabad concerts had a Rs 641 crore economic impact, showcasing the growing power of live events to stimulate widespread spending and employment.
Large-format live concerts are emerging as powerful economic engines for India’s entertainment and tourism sectors, with recent studies showing how a single tour or event can generate hundreds of crores in economic activity.
Punjabi singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh’s Dil-Luminati India Tour 2024 generated an estimated socio-economic impact of Rs 943 crore, according to a report by Ernst & Young (EY). The findings, detailed in Diljit Dosanjh’s Dil-Luminati India Tour 2024 – Socio-economic Impact Report, highlight the expanding role of large-format live events in driving spending across tourism, hospitality and allied sectors.
The tour featured 14 concerts across 13 cities over a two-month period and attracted more than 320,000 attendees, making it one of the largest concert tours undertaken by an Indian artist in terms of reach, attendance and economic contribution.
EY estimates that direct revenues from the tour, including ticket sales, sponsorships and on-site spending, accounted for about Rs 276 crore. Indirect revenues, largely driven by audience spending on travel, accommodation, dining, tourism and shopping, contributed around Rs 553 crore. Government revenues generated through goods and services tax and event-related permissions were estimated at approximately Rs 114 crore.
“Events have long played a critical role in driving employment and economic activity within India’s media and entertainment sector,” said Ashish Pherwani, Partner and Media & Entertainment Leader at EY India. “The recent surge in large-format concerts has significantly amplified this impact, contributing meaningfully to GDP growth while catalysing employment, consumer spending, infrastructure development and foreign exchange inflows.”
The report found that about 38% of attendees travelled from other cities to attend the concerts, with more than half extending their stay beyond the event dates, boosting tourism and hospitality spending. The tour supported more than 118,000 man-days of employment across event production, security, logistics, transportation and hospitality.
Nearly half of the audience came from Tier II and Tier III cities, reflecting the widening reach of large live events beyond major metros. Ticket sales accounted for about 80% of direct revenues, with mid-premium categories generating the largest share of ticketing income. All tickets were purchased through digital platforms, underlining the growing role of online channels in scaling live entertainment.
A similar multiplier effect was observed during concerts by British rock band Coldplay in Ahmedabad. According to an April 2025 report by EY-Parthenon and BookMyShow’s live entertainment division BookMyShow Live, the event generated an estimated economic impact of Rs 641 crore.
Titled India's Rising Concert Economy: Coldplay’s Ahmedabad Tour Sets the Blueprint for India’s Next Cultural Boomtowns, the report estimates that the concerts directly injected around Rs 392 crore into the city’s economy through spending on accommodation, transport, dining and retail, while contributing about Rs 72 crore in GST revenue to the Government of India.
The concerts attracted about 222,000 fans from more than 500 cities across all 28 states and five union territories, underscoring the growing ability of large music events to draw nationwide audiences and create substantial local economic spillovers.
