The former captain had written on X over 13 years ago, "End of an era (45) and the start of a new one (77)." Interestingly, Sharma sports jersey number 45 while Gill wears 77.
Notably, Sharma had sported jersey number 77 in the 2012 T20 World Cup and this was the reference made in the post. Along with Gill's appointment as captain, Shreyas Iyer has been named vice-captain of the ODI squad. Dhruv Jurel has been named as the backup wicketkeeper, while experienced Ravindra Jadeja and jasprit Bumrah have been rested. Varun Chakravarthy, who was India's top wicket taker in the Champions Trophy has also been dropped. Mohammed Shami has also lost his place in the ODI setup, potentially marking the end of his international career in the format.
The three-match ODI series against Australia will be Gill's first assignment as ODI captain, where he will lead a mix of experienced players and new talents.
