Did Gulveer Singh Break National Record At New York City Half Marathon? Fact Check
Star Indian distance runner Gulveer Singh achieved another milestone in his career by finishing third at the prestigious New York City Half Marathon, an event that draws some of the world’s top long-distance runners.
The 27-year-old Army runner completed the race in 59 minutes 42 seconds, finishing behind South Africa’s Adriaan Wildschutt, who claimed the top spot with a time of 59:30, and Morocco-born American runner Zouhair Talbi, who finished second in 59:41.
Although Gulveer’s time was faster than the national record of 1:00:30 set by steeplechase specialist Avinash Sable at the Delhi Half Marathon in 2020, it will not be recognised as a national record because the New York City Half Marathon course is not eligible for records. The event is run on a point-to-point course where the start and finish are separated by a distance greater than the permissible limit for record purposes — approximately 11.6km apart compared to the maximum allowed 10.55km — thus breaching World Athletics regulations for record-eligible courses.
Nevertheless, the times are still considered valid for purposes such as personal bests and performance rankings, even though they do not qualify for record recognition under World Athletics rules.
This achievement remains significant for Gulveer, who holds multiple national records ranging from the 3,000m on the track to the 25km road race. The Asian Games medallist in the 10,000m at the 2022 Hangzhou Games also holds the national records in the men’s 5,000m and 10,000m.
He previously had a strong performance at the 2025 Asian Championships in Gumi, South Korea, where he won gold in both the 5,000m and 10,000m races.
This year, Gulveer is confident of securing a podium finish at both the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in July and the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya in September.
“I’m fit and looking forward to good results in upcoming major international races," said the Army runner, who is currently based in Colorado Springs, United States.
Gulveer’s recent success led to his inclusion in the Target Olympic Podium Scheme’s (TOPS) Core group, alongside rising pistol shooters Samrat Rana and Suruchi Singh and world champion para-shuttler Pramod Bhagat.
Last year, at the Ten Track Festival, a World Athletics Continental Tour event, Gulveer improved his national 10,000m record, clocking 27:00.22 to finish sixth in San Juan Capistrano, California. This marked an improvement of more than 14 seconds from his previous record of 27:14.88, set in Hachioji, Japan, in November 2024. Gulveer came agonisingly close to qualifying for the World Athletics Championships 2025, missing the qualification mark of 27:00.00 by just 22 milliseconds.
