He exhumed bodies from cemeteries. He made objects from human remains. His actions inspired iconic horror films. The show's depiction of Henry's death is not historically accurate.
Monster: The Ed Gein Story, the third installment of the famous Monster series, premiered on Netflix on October 3. The series, which stars Charlie Hunnam in the lead role, narrates the tale of Ed Gein, an infamous murderer and grave robber who inspired some of Hollywood's iconic on-screen serial killers, as per USA Today.
The show paints Ed as the culprit, suggesting that he offed Henry after a family feud escalated, dragging the body to the woods and starting a fire to wipe away the evidence. This marks the second time Murphy has explored a story set in Wisconsin. Netflix reported that the 2022 series Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story became one of the streaming platform's biggest hits.
Edward Gein's crimes, however, occurred more than 30 years before Dahmer's. While Gein confessed to — and evidence confirms — only two murders, he exhumed nine bodies from nearby cemeteries, grotesquely turning their remains into masks, furniture, and other objects in his Plainfield home. Despite the shocking nature of his acts, Gein became a model for cinematic serial killers, inspiring iconic characters in Psycho, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and Silence of the Lambs.

Did Ed Gein kills his brother in real life?
In the premiere episode of Monster: The Ed Gein Story, the series dramatizes Ed Gein killing his older brother, Henry, 43, after Henry expresses a desire to escape their controlling mother, Augusta. While Gein admitted to murdering two women, he never confessed to killing his brother. Reports indicate that Gein himself notified local authorities about the fire, which ultimately led to the discovery of Henry's body. Burn marks were evident, but police ruled out foul play, and the county coroner declared the cause of death as heart failure due to asphyxiation.
Gein, a resident of rural Plainfield, Wisconsin, was arrested in November 1957 after the body of Bernice Worden, a local hardware store owner, was discovered hanging from hooks in his shed. Investigators also found additional human remains in his home, including those of Mary Hogan, a 51-year-old tavern owner who had been missing for three years. Among the macabre discoveries were human skulls, masks made from female faces, a lampshade crafted from human skin, and a wearable corset fashioned from a female torso, as reported by USA Today.

What is historically accurate is that Ed Gein confessed to killing Bernice Worden and Mary Hogan in the 1950s. His home of horrors, filled with grotesque objects made from grave-robbed remains, inspired iconic horror films from Psycho to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. However, the show's portrayal of Henry's death as Gein's first act of violence remains dramatized rather than factual.The Ed Gein Story revolves around the story of Edward 'Ed' Gein, a notorious murderer of Plainfield, Wisconsin. This is not the first time that Ed Gein has been the subject of a Hollywood project. His gruesome crimes in his hometown gathered widespread notoriety, leading it to be the subject and inspiration for filmmakers to make a cinematic version.
