In the early 1970s, Dharmendra was among Hindi cinema's rising stars when writer Salim Khan approached him with the concept for Zanjeer, the film that would later define Amitabh Bachchan's career. Impressed by the idea, Dharmendra paid Rs 2,500 to acquire it.
According to Written by Salim-Javed by Diptakirti Chaudhuri, Salim had developed the story even before partnering with Javed Akhtar. Inspired by his father's years as a police officer in the Chambal ravines—a backdrop that also influenced Sholay—Salim sold the concept to Dharmendra, who was slated to star, while his brother Ajit would co-produce the film with director Prakash Mehra.

Long before Hema Malini or Prakash Kaur, Dharmendra's first love was Hamida, his schoolteacher's daughter, whom he lost after the 1947 Partition. On Dus Ka Dum, he recalled, “Hum man hi man mein kehte rehte the. Thandi aahen bharte rehte the. Samne wali ko maloom hi nahi tha (We kept saying it silently in our hearts… the one in front never even knew).” He added about his poem for her, “Main chhota tha, maasoom thi umar meri… Woh taliba thi aathvi ki, main chhathi ka tha. In Hema Malini: Beyond the Dream Girl, she explained that the visit to her uncle Ajeet Deol's home in 2015 brought her face-to-face with her stepmother. “I touched her feet, and she left me after blessing me,” Esha shared.
Hema Malini also reflected on the family dynamic in her biography, noting that she had deliberately maintained distance from Prakash out of respect. “I didn't want to disturb anyone. I am happy with whatever Dharamji did for me and my daughters. He played the role of a father, like any father would do. I guess I am happy with that,” she wrote.
