DGCA new flight tickets rule: 48-hour free cancellation, no charges for name correction within 24 hours of booking

DGCA new flight tickets rule: 48-hour free cancellation, no charges for name correction within 24 hours of booking
DGCA new flight tickets rule: India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has updated its rules on airline ticket refunds to make cancellations and changes easier for passengers. Under the new policy, flyers can cancel or make changes to their air tickets without paying extra charges within 48 hours of booking, subject to certain conditions.
This “look-in” period applies when the flight departure is at least seven days away for domestic travel and 15 days away for international travel. After 48 hours, passengers will have to pay normal cancellation fees as per airline rules.
The DGCA has also said that airlines cannot charge passengers for correcting a name error on a ticket if the mistake is reported within 24 hours of booking and the ticket was booked directly through the airline’s website.
To address long delays in refunds, the DGCA has set deadlines for airlines to return money quickly. Refunds for credit card transactions should be processed within seven days, while cash refunds at airline offices should be given immediately. Airlines must also refund all statutory taxes and related charges when a ticket is cancelled or when a passenger does not show up for a flight.
The DGCA’s revised rules require airlines to display clear information on refunds and cancellation charges at the time of booking. This includes showing the refund amount and explaining any fees before a passenger completes the booking. Additional processing fees cannot be added beyond what is stated.
In cases of medical emergencies, airlines may offer either a refund or a credit shell, depending on the situation.
The updated refund policy has come after rising complaints from air travellers about refund delays and confusion over charges. The DGCA hopes these changes will provide more flexibility, fairness, and clarity for passengers booking flights in India.
