Temporary holding centers will be prepared in each district to house illegal immigrants. This directive emphasizes the state's focus on security and compliance. The move comes as a nationwide exercise to update electoral rolls is underway. Opposition parties have raised concerns about the process.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has issued a strict order to all officials to act firmly against unauthorized residents and prepare temporary holding centres, underscoring the state's focus on security and compliance. Yogi Adityanath has instructed all district magistrates of the state to take prompt and strict action against illegal immigrants in the state, news agency PTI reported citing an official.
Reiterating that law and order, national security, and social harmony remain his administration's top priorities, he said no form of illegal activity would be tolerated.
Detention centre in each UP district?
According to the brief statement, illegal immigrants with foreign citizenship will be housed in these centres and will be ensured there until the necessary verification process is completed."The chief minister has directed that each district administration ensure the identification of illegal immigrants living in their area and initiate action as per the rules," the statement read. "The chief minister has also directed that temporary detention centres be established in each district to house infiltrators," it added.

According to the statement, illegal immigrants holding foreign citizenship will be kept in these centres until the required verification process is completed. Adityanath said those held in the detention facilities will be deported to their countries of origin following established procedures.
Congress leader Ajay Rai, reacted to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's order on identifying and detaining illegal infiltrators. “This government has been running under Yogi ji's leadership since 2017, eight years, and they still have not been able to identify infiltrators. This is only about creating hype and fooling people," he said.
SIR across India
Uttar Pradesh shares an open border with Nepal, allowing free movement of citizens of both countries but there are checks on residents of other nationalities. The directive from Uttar Pradesh government comes when a nationwide SIR exercise is underway across 12 states and union territories, including Uttar Pradesh, ahead of the final electoral roll publication on February 7, 2026. According to the Election Commission, printing and training were conducted from October 28 to November 3, followed by the Enumeration Phase from November 4 to December 4. The draft electoral rolls will be released on December 9, after which claims and objections can be filed between December 9 and January 8, 2026. The Notice Phase for hearings and verification is scheduled from December 9 to January 31, 2026. The final electoral rolls will be published on February 7, 2026. Opposition parties have strongly criticised the SIR process, claiming it is intended to remove voters from underprivileged communities from the lists.
Stage set for 2026 Assembly Elections?
With assembly elections due in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Puducherry in 2026, Yogi government's move against infiltrators may find an echo in these poll-bound states where infiltration and demographic change have always been central topics of socio-political debate.This could also help the BJP and chief minister Yogi Adityanath in UP Assembly Elections due in 2027.
