According to sources, the aircraft encountered extremely dense fog in the Pune district and the Baramati region, which caused it to lose its course while flying through a hilly area before crashing into a rocky outcrop.
As part of the ongoing investigation, senior DGCA officials said the probe will examine the distribution of the wreckage, which will be closely studied and photographed to assess the aircraft's direction, speed and impact at the time of the crash.
The black box will be retrieved to evaluate the aircraft's condition and determine whether it was fit to fly, while pre-flight maintenance records will also come under scrutiny.
Investigators will analyse the cockpit voice recorder to understand the pilots' final moments and review official air traffic control communications to establish what went wrong. External factors, including weather conditions, runway positioning and wind patterns, will also be examined as part of the inquiry.
Pawar was en route to Baramati to address a public rally ahead of the Zilla Parishad elections. Earlier on the day of the crash, he had attended a meeting of the Maharashtra Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure in Mumbai, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, which was also attended by state minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule and senior officials.
Ajit Pawar was one of Maharashtra's longest-serving deputy chief ministers, having held the post non-consecutively for six terms under different governments.
