Delhi residents flee capital amid rising health concerns and pollution

Delhi's severe air pollution is compelling residents to leave the city. Many families are now choosing to relocate permanently or seek temporary escapes from the toxic air. This trend highlights how pollution is directly impacting life choices and health. While some can move, others face the challenge of enduring the unhealthy environment.
For Ketan Sharma, Delhi was more than just a city—it was home. Born and raised in the capital, Sharma grew up navigating the familiar lanes of Malviya Nagar, cherishing childhood games, college hangouts, and family evenings on the terrace, reported TOI. Yet a few years ago, he made a decision he never imagined: selling the house he grew up in and leaving Delhi permanently.
The move came after his daughter was born and his parents began struggling with age-related health issues. “It just didn't feel right breathing the toxic air,” Sharma told Times of India. Packing decades of memories, he relocated with his wife, child, and elderly parents to Bengaluru, seeking cleaner air and a healthier environment.
Sharma's story now resonates with many Delhiites. A recent viral social media post captured the widespread anxiety over the capital's deteriorating air quality. The post recounted how a professional, worried about the health of their child, left a prestigious government job and moved away from Delhi. The response underscored a collective frustration: pollution in Delhi is no longer a seasonal nuisance but a serious factor shaping life decisions. With air quality consistently in the “very poor” category over the past few weeks, families are either planning temporary winter escapes or relocating permanently.
“I didn't realise the intensity of the problem till my parents started falling sick at the onset of winter every year,” Sharma adds. “Having lived in Delhi all my life, I probably adapted. But as my parents aged, I could see how the foul air was taking a toll on them. Once my child was born, I was sure we had to leave. I found a job in Bengaluru, and we sold our Delhi house and bought one in Bengaluru. I don't see any reason to move back.”
For Danish, a Delhi University student, leaving the city is less a luxury and more a necessity. “Since my mother moved here two years ago, her health has deteriorated because of the pollution. The situation is so bad that as soon as I finish my studies, I plan to move somewhere else. Last year, I took a short break and went back to Ayodhya, my home town, in Nov. I plan to do the same now. This will perhaps be my last year in this city,” he told TOI.
Some residents continue to endure the toxic air despite health risks. Vitasta, a schoolteacher, describes her daily struggle: “My mother has a heart condition and relies on a pacemaker. Doctors have strongly recommended that we keep an air purifier running at home at all times. She can't do without it even for a minute. The situation is affecting our entire family. Yesterday, I was telling my relatives that a time may come when people will have no choice but to leave this city. As a teacher, even when students attend online classes, I still have to go to school. But it's becoming unbearable.”
Others attempt alternative coping strategies. Professionals like Rajiv Soni, currently in Slovakia, schedule work trips or remote assignments to avoid Delhi's worst pollution months. “My projects often take me abroad, so I plan them around the pollution season,” he says.
Some find temporary refuge in hill towns such as Ranikhet, Mussoorie, Chail, or Kasauli, renting service apartments to escape the smog.
However, not everyone has the means to leave. As one X user commented, “While many respect the couple's decision to leave, not everyone has that privilege. Most people can't just quit and move. We need competent govt officials to make policy changes. Running away is easy — fixing [the pollution problem] is hard.”
Delhi's worsening air quality is no longer an abstract policy issue—it is shaping the decisions, health, and futures of those who call the capital home.
