Delhi Metro Commute Takes An Unexpected Turn As Passenger Finds Large Box Of Condoms: ‘Kaunsa Station Hain Yeh?’

You see lost phones, laptops (maybe) or people sleeping on the Delhi Metro every day, but spotting a big box of Nirodh condoms? That's something rare.

A routine Delhi Metro commute took an unexpected turn for one passenger when they discovered a large box of Nirodh condoms behind a station gate. The post, shared on Reddit, shows the box along with multiple packets of condoms.

According to the user, only three packets were reportedly open.

Social media reacts

The post quickly went viral with many on social media recalling the Delhi Metro's earlier initiatives to distribute condoms as part of public health campaigns, while others joked about what commuters might have thought upon seeing the box.

One person commented, “Earlier in the day, I heard these were made available at busstands, railway stations and many such frequently visited public spaces."

Another wrote, “Genuinely asking, do people actually use these? “Nirodh" specifically. I'm a med student and I've only learnt about them in my contraceptives class that they exist. I think it's a great initiative by the health department of the country. But I've never heard of people using it. Along with Mala-D/N and Antara," wrote the next.

“First, I thought they were pop-pop crackers, but I got to know about condoms after reading the comments," wrote the next.

“Aren't they government ones for rural areas. return it to the government hospital if you can," commented another.

Another commented, “Looks like the condoms earmarked for free distribution under the government schemes were diverted. Such a common occurrence in the government. Health care."

Delhi Metro partnered with Nirodh

In 2014, HLL Lifecare, one of the largest manufacturers of contraceptives, partnered with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to install vending machines at various metro stations.

The machines were set to vend Nirodh condoms, along with other health products like oral contraceptives and sanitary napkins.

Nirodh condoms were launched in the 1960s as a reliable means of contraception and protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). These are available free of cost at the government's health centres.

Free condoms are distributed through Targeted Intervention (TI) NGOs, Integrated Counseling And Testing Centre ICTC), and Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) centres for HIV/AIDS prevention, particularly targeting high-risk groups (HRGs).
