Delhi-Dehradun expressway: 10 things to know about Rs 12,000 crore project opening this April
The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is nearing its opening on 14 April. PM Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate this high-speed corridor. This move is expected to revolutionise travel between the national capital and Uttarakhand. Once this expressway becomes operational, the travel time between Delhi and Dehradun will be slashed to just 2.5 hours from 6.5 hours.
Beyond speed, the expressway is designed to decongest the Delhi-Meerut Expressway and other major highways currently burdened by heavy traffic.
One of the most significant features of this project is the 12 km Ganeshpur-Datkali elevated road, recognised as Asia’s longest wildlife corridor. While certain sections are already open to the public, the entire stretch will become functional following the April 14 inauguration.
The expressway will provide seamless connectivity for tourists traveling from various hubs, including:
NCR and Haryana: Sonipat, Panipat, Kundli, Manesar, Gurugram, Palwal, Baghpat, Ghaziabad, Noida and Greater Noida.
Punjab and UP: Chandigarh, Ambala and Agra (via the Yamuna Expressway).
Spanning approximately 210 km, the route integrates two major expressways, five national highways, and over ten state highways.
Timeline: Approved by the Central Government in February 2020, the foundation stone was laid by PM Modi in December 2021.
The Route: Starting near Delhi’s Akshardham Temple, it traverses Baghpat, Baraut, Muzaffarnagar, Shamli and Saharanpur before reaching Dehradun.
Reduced Distance: The travel distance will be shortened from 235 km to 213 km.
Three-Phase Development: The project was completed in three stages: Akshardham (Delhi) to EPE Junction, EPE Junction to Saharanpur Bypass, and Saharanpur to Dehradun.
High-Speed Travel: Designed for speeds of 100 km/h or more, making the 2.5-hour journey possible.
Religious Tourism: A dedicated spur will connect to Haridwar and the Chardham Highway, improving access to pilgrimage sites and hill stations.
Eco-Sensitive Design: The final 20 km stretch passes through the eco-sensitive zone of Rajaji National Park.
Infrastructure Stats: Built at a cost of Rs 12,000 crore, the 6-lane expressway features 7 interchanges, 2 railway overbridges, 10 bridges and 14 wayside amenities.
Engineering Marvels: Includes a 370-meter tunnel near the Dat Kali Temple and the 12 km elevated wildlife corridor.
Animal Safety: To protect local fauna, the expressway includes two 200-meter-long elephant underpasses and six specialised animal crossings.
