Delhi blast a ‘terrorist incident’, says Centre

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday described the Delhi blast as a “terrorist incident”.
The Cabinet added that it has directed the investigation into the blast be pursued with urgency so that the perpetrators, the collaborators and their sponsors are brought to justice without delay.
On Monday evening, a car exploded near the Red Fort metro station. While no details have been officially provided yet about what caused the blast, the police have filed a case under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and the Explosives Act.
Speaking to reporters after a Cabinet meeting, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that a resolution was adopted during the briefing condemning the “dastardly and cowardly act”.
He said that the Cabinet expressed its grief and observed two minutes' silence in honour of the lives lost in the blast.
In its resolution, the Cabinet said that the country had witnessed “a heinous terror incident, perpetrated by anti-national forces” through a car explosion.
“The Cabinet pays its solemn respects to the victims of this senseless act of violence and conveys its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families,” it said. “The Cabinet reiterates India's unwavering commitment to a policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.”
The Cabinet also recorded its appreciation for the statements of solidarity and support from several countries.
“The Cabinet notes with appreciation the timely and coordinated response of the authorities, security agencies, and citizens who acted with courage and compassion in the face of adversity,” the resolution said. “Their dedication and sense of duty are deeply commendable.”
It added that the situation continued to be closely monitored at the highest levels of the government.
“The Cabinet reaffirms the government's steadfast resolve to safeguard the lives and well-being of all Indians, consistent with its enduring commitment to national security and the safety of every citizen,” the resolution said.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also led a Cabinet Committee on Security meeting to review the situation and assess the investigation.
