Decoding Chennai’s Heart-Shaped Traffic Light: Is It For Love, Safety Or Just Ad Campaign?
Whenever we stop at a traffic signal, the red light is one of the most familiar sights, a simple and powerful sign telling us to pause. But at some of Chennai's busy junctions, something different catches the eye: the red light glows in the shape of a heart. Many people driving through the city might have noticed this unique touch, but few knew the story behind it.
Recently, a man spotted one such heart-shaped red light near the airport and shared a photo online, sparking curiosity and discussions among residents. The post, titled “Spotted this heart-shaped red-light at a signal close to the airport. SO cute, Chennai! Does this happen at most lights?" was shared on Reddit. It shows a glowing red heart replacing the usual circular light, giving a charming twist to an everyday sight.
The post quickly gathered over 400 upvotes and several comments from people trying to decode its meaning.
Locals React With Theories And Jokes
Many users shared that these heart-shaped lights have actually been around for a while. “It's been a year since they implemented these in most of the signals around Chennai," a user commented.
Another added, “Yes! All throughout Chennai, the red lights are hearts. I think it's supposed to mean that you have loved ones waiting, so drive carefully. Something like that."
Others brought humour into the mix. “I think it means ignore the red light like you get ignored. One-sided love signal," joked a person.
Another quipped, “A rumour I heard is Uday Anna did this for a movie heroine. Any other rumours that you guys know why this was implemented?"
Some Link It To Awareness Campaigns
While some saw it as a fun or quirky design, others suggested more practical reasons.
“If I'm not wrong, it's by MIOT's sponsorship for heart wellness awareness," a user wrote.
Another added, “It's an ad campaign, makkalae."

However, not everyone agreed. “No bro, it was to commemorate the 100th anniversary of traffic signals or something," someone claimed, while another observed, “Just a heart sticker if you look closely."
Whatever the real reason, Chennai's heart-shaped red lights have certainly won over the internet, and drivers' hearts, too.
