Days After Vijay's Swearing-In, Congress Set To Get 2 Cabinet Berths In TVK-led Tamil Nadu Govt
The Congress will get two cabinet portfolios in the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government in Tamil Nadu, the party’s MP Manickam Tagore announced on Friday.
The Congress — a key ally in the Chief Minister Vijay-led government — extended support to the TVK after it failed to touch the majority mark of 118 in the 234-member assembly.
In a post on ‘X’, Congress MP Manickam Tagore wrote, “Before the 2026 elections, the DMK openly declared that Tamil Nadu would not accept a ‘share in governance.’ The people have now delivered their verdict. The people of Tamil Nadu have said that they want a share in governance."
The Congress MP hailed the moment as historic and emotional as he announced that the party would get two cabinet berths in Tamil Nadu.

“A new history is being written. TVK leader Vijay, who had promised that alliance parties would always be given a share in power, has kept his word. Now, after 59 years, two Congress ministers wearing khadi have found a place in the cabinet.
For thousands of Congress workers like me, this is an emotional and historic moment", he said.
Tagore also called for the eradication of corruption from the Tamil Nadu administration. “Tamil Nadu must be taken from 36% commission politics to a corruption-free administration."
Launched just two years back, Vijay’s party TVK emerged as the single-largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Election, bagging 108 seats. However, it failed to touch the majority mark of 118, leading to a hunt for allies by the party’s chief and actor-turned-politician, Vijay.
The Congress, which had won five seats, backed the TVK and the seat tally reached 113. Later, regional parties, including — the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Communist Party of India (CPI) and CPI(M) — joined hands with the TVK, helping it cross the magic mark.
On May 7, Vijay was sworn in as chief minister at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, becoming the first non-DMK and non-AIADMK Chief Minister in the state since 1967.
Congress leader and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had attended his oath-taking ceremony.
