Days After Lecornu Quit As French PM, President Macron Reappoints Him
French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday reappointed Sebastien Lecornu as PM days after latter submitted resignation.
“The president of the republic has named Mr Sebastien Lecornu prime minister and has charged him with forming a government," the Élysée Palace said in a statement Friday.
In a post on X Lecornu said: “I accept – out of duty – the mission entrusted to me by the President of the Republic to do everything possible to provide France with a budget by the end of the year and to address the daily life issues of our fellow citizens. We must put an end to this political crisis that exasperates the French people and to this instability that is harmful to France's image and its interests."
According to Reuters, Lecornu's immediate task will be to deliver a budget to parliament by the end of Monday.
Sébastien Lecornu, who took charge of the PM's Office on September 9, 2025, had resigned with his 14-hour-old cabinet on Monday. He was Macron's fifth prime minister in two years.
Lecornu, a close ally of President Emmanuel Macron, had on Sunday appointed his ministers, and the cabinet had been set to hold its first meeting on Monday afternoon.
However, the new cabinet line-up had irked his opponents and allies, who either found it too right-wing or not enough, raising questions on how long it could last, the report suggested.
In response to Friday's announcement, president of the far-right National Rally party, Jordan Bardella, blasted the decision as “a bad joke, a democratic disgrace, and a humiliation for the French people," in a post on X.
