Data breach exposes 2.73 lakh bank records

An unsecured cloud server leaked hundreds of thousands of bank transfer records online, compromising critical data including names, banking details, and contact information.
Researchers at cybersecurity firm UpGuard — which discovered the data breach — said the compromised Amazon server had more than 2.73 lakh files when the breach was discovered on August 26.
Each file documented a single bank transaction, containing “unredacted bank account numbers, transaction amounts, and in many of the files, individuals' names, phone numbers, and email addresses”.
The documents were formatted identically per the requirements of National Automated Clearing House (NACH). The clearing service was introduced in 2016 by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to consolidate regional electronic clearing service (ECS) systems. As of 2025, most banks and financial institutions in the country use the system.
NPCI has clarified that the data leak did not originate from its systems. “A detailed verification and review has confirmed that no data related to NACH mandate information / records from NPCI systems have been exposed / compromised. The data in question does not belong to NPCI.”
The exposed data was spread across 38 banks and non-bank lenders, the agency said. More than half the records in the server came from IPO-bound non-banking finance company (NBFC) Aye Finance (59.63%). State Bank of India (24.22%), Muthoot Capital (13.31%), Bank of Baroda (11.13%), and Punjab National Bank (10.6%) were also among the affected lenders.
While Aye Finance was disproportionately affected by the data leak, the other lenders surpass it in size by a huge margin.
“Aye Fin's disproportionate representation in this data set led to the hypothesis that they would be able to secure the data and/or identify the entity responsible for the bucket,” UpGuard said
To analyse the data, UpGuard downloaded 55,000 files and continued to monitor the cloud server, finding that around 3,000 files were being daily
UpGuard said it notified Aye Finance on August 27 and then again on August 28. It escalated the matter to NPCI on August 29. On September 3, it reached out to CERT-In, the government's nodal agency to address cyberattacks, and secured the exposed bucket on September 4th.
Despite its scale, none of the involved entities have accepted responsibility for the data leak, UpGuard said. Given the severity of the risk, it notified CERT-In that the bucket was secured instead of waiting longer for a response from the parties, the blog post read.
"As the NACH environment involves multiple parties like NPCI, Banks and Integration Partners, such misconfiguration could have happened anywhere. There are around 38 institutions that are impacted, and hence the configuration issue cannot be at an individual institution's end. Hence, we thought it would be prudent to contact the other parties in the chain," Aye Finance told ET in a statement.
"The vendor who manages ACH mandates between banks and the non-banking originators communicated that they had identified a misconfiguration issue a few weeks back. The integration partner has confirmed that the folder did not have sensitive information like KYC or Aadhaar Number, PAN Number, or any other sensitive identifiers. The folder had unsigned ACH mandate applications," the company added.
The development was first reported in TechCrunch.
