Good news for Dahisar commuters. Mumbai's metro network has reached a major milestone with the opening of the Dahisar East interchange, the city's first-ever paid-area interchange. For the first time in Mumbai, passengers can switch between two metro lines within the paid area, saving time and eliminating congestion at entry and exit points.
The facility, developed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), was commissioned in October 2024 and the full Phase 1 opening is now operational after safety testing.

What is the Dahisar East Interchange?
Located at the north end of Dahisar East Metro station, the interchange integrates Metro Line 7, Line 2A and Phase 1 of Metro Line 9. This interchange connects:
Metro Line 7 (Red Line): Dahisar East to Andheri East
Metro Line 2A (Yellow Line): DN Nagar (Andheri West)
Metro Line 9 – Phase 1: Dahisar East to Kashigaon (Mira Bhayandar)
What Are The Key Connections Of Line 9 Phase 1?
Phase 1 of Metro Line 9 spans 4.5 km and includes four stations: Dahisar East, Pandurang Wadi, Miragaon and Kashigaon. With this launch, commuters from Mira Bhayandar can now board a metro at Kashigaon and continue directly on Line 7 toward Andheri East, without changing trains, significantly improving suburban connectivity.
Future extensions include Line 7A to CSMIA airport (62 per cent complete as of September 2025) and links to Lines 3, 4 and 10.
How Does The Interchange Benefit Commuters?
The interchange is expected to cut Mira Road–Andheri commute time from 1.5 hours to under 50 minutes. It will also reduce congestion on the Western Express Highway (WEH) and the Dahisar toll naka. The Dahisar East interchange will also shift thousands of daily commuters from roads to rail.
MMRDA projections estimate daily ridership of over 11 lakh passengers by 2031, potentially reducing road traffic by 50–75 per cent on key corridors.
What Is The Current Status Of The Dahisar East Interchange?
CMRS testing is ongoing and the Dahisar East interchange is open to the public post January 15 due to election codes.
Phase 1 of Mumbai Metro Line 9 (Dahisar East to Kashigaon) was commissioned after CMRS safety testing. Delays from December 2025 targets stemmed due to the election code of conduct, but operations are fully functional without a formal inauguration.
What Are The Connected Lines Details?
Line 2A (Yellow): Operational since April 2022, this line spans 18.6 km, covering 17 stations to Andheri West; northern terminus at Dahisar East.
Line 7 (Red): Operational, 16.5 km elevated from Dahisar East to Andheri East, interchanges with WEH Metro Line 1.
Line 9 Phase 1 (Red extension): This station, spanning 4.5 km, covers 4 stations (Dahisar East, Pandurang Wadi, Miragaon, Kashigaon). Services commenced in early January 2026.
Which Areas Benefit Most From The Interchange?
With the Dahisar East interchange, residents of northern Mumbai suburbs, especially Mira Bhayandar and Dahisar, benefit the most. The connection cuts Mira Road to Andheri commute from 1.5 hours to under 50 minutes via seamless transfers on Lines 2A, 7 and 9 Phase 1. It also decongests Dahisar toll naka and WEH, aiding daily travel to business hubs like BKC, SEEPZ and Bandra.
What Are The Areas That Benefit the Most?
Mira Bhayandar (Kashigaon, Miragaon, Pandurang Wadi): Faster access to Andheri, BKC, SEEPZ, hospitals and educational hubs. It is expected to boost real estate and the local economy.
Dahisar & Borivali: Reduced Road dependence and smoother east–west connectivity
Kandivali, Malad, Goregaon: Improved multimodal access to business districts.
Future Expansions on Track
Post this, the MMRDA are planning several key expansions. These include:
Next phase of Line 9 to Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium, Bhayandar (expected within months)
Metro Line 7A to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (62 per cent complete as of September 2025) to enhance airport links.
Additional interchanges with Lines 3, 4 and 10.
Planned Line 10 (Thane–Mira Bhayandar) and Line 13 (Mira Road–Virar) will enable end-to-end metro journeys across the MMR.

What Is The Impact?
Though Vasai, Virar and Thane are not yet directly connected, commuters from these regions already benefit indirectly via suburban rail and buses feeding into the Dahisar East interchange. Once Lines 10 and 13 are completed post-2026, the region is expected to see 50–60 per cent travel time savings to key destinations such as BKC and the airport. Combined with the Uttan-Virar Sea Link, the project will unlock economic growth across the Thane and Palghar districts.
