Cyclone Ditwah nears Tamil Nadu coast, 54 flights cancelled at Chennai airport: 10 points
Cyclone Ditwah is influencing east coast weather, prompting a yellow alert for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, including Chennai. As many as 54 flights have been cancelled at the Chennai Airport with Air India issuing an advisory for passengers. The IMD has warned of heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry.
As Cyclone Ditwah continues to influence weather conditions along the country's east coast, the IMD has sounded a yellow alert for several districts across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, including Chennai, for the next three hours on Sunday till 10 am. The cyclonic storm Ditwah over the southwest Bay of Bengal has moved northwards at seven kmph and is posing a severe threat to northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts.
"It is very likely to move nearly northwards parallel to North Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts during next 24 hours. While moving northwards the cyclonic storm will be centered over southwest Bay of Bengal within a minimum distance of 70 km and 30 km from the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coastline by noon and evening of today, the 30th November respectively," the IMD said in its weather bulletin on Sunday morning.
The cyclone is not expected to make landfall. Instead, it may weaken over the next few hours and move northwards parallel to the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts.
Cyclone Ditwah: Heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Andhra
-The IMD has warned that the cyclone will come within 60 km, 50 km, and 25 km of the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coastline by midnight today, early morning, and evening of tomorrow, respectively.-The IMD has sounded red alert in some districts of Tamil Nadu. It has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected across multiple districts, with extremely heavy rain forecast for Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Villuppuram, Chengalpattu, and Puducherry–Karaikal.
-Thanjavur, Tiruchirappalli, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Ranipet are likely to receive heavy rainfall, while Vellore, Dharmapuri, Dindigul, and Theni may see isolated significant showers, the IMD said.

-Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected at isolated places in South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema districts, as per the IMD. Residents have been asked to stay indoors, avoid coastal areas and fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.
-In view of cyclonic storm Ditwah, Air India released a travel advisory cautioning flyers about possible flight disruptions due to the cyclone. Passengers have been urged to check flight status before leaving for the airport.
-Due to cyclone Ditwah, on Sunday, 27 departing flights from Chennai Airport to various destinations such as Madurai, Tiruchi, Thoothukudi, Salem, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Jaffna (Sri Lanka), along with 27 arriving flights, were cancelled from early morning until midnight, taking the total to 54 flights, according to ANI.
-The weather system is expected to come within 25 km of the coast on Sunday evening before weakening into a deep depression by Monday morning, according to IMD.

-In Tamil Nadu, 12 NDRF teams and 16 SDRF teams are positioned across rain-hit districts as the state braces for heavy showers. 13 relief camps have been set up in Ramanathapuram, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Villupuram, according to TOI.
-The Puducherry District Collector ordered all liquor shops and bars to shut by 8 pm, as part of precautionary measures ahead of expected severe weather.
-Railway Minister Ashiwini Viashnaw on Saturday reviewed preparedness with Southern Railway to ensure minimal disruption. "In view of Cyclone Ditwah, Hon'ble MR Ashwini Vaishnaw reviewed preparedness with Southern Railway teams to ensure minimal disruption. War Rooms at Board, zonal and divisional levels are activated. Railways is closely coordinating with civil authorities and continuously monitoring the situation until normalcy returns," Ministry of Railway said in a post on X.
