‘Culprit won’t be spared, no matter how influential’: Haryana CM Saini on IPS officer’s death
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Saturday assured the family of Indian Police Service officer Y Puran Kumar, who died earlier this week, that the government would ensure justice, regardless of “how influential the culprit” may be, Hindustan Times reported.
“A thorough investigation will be conducted in this matter, and if anyone is found guilty, strict action will be taken against them,” Saini said at an event in Panchkula.
He also urged Opposition leaders not to politicise the matter, ANI reported.
Kumar was found dead at his residence in Chandigarh's Sector 11 on Tuesday afternoon. The police say he died by suicide.
In a “final note” recovered from the scene, he named 11 serving and retired officers, including Haryana Director General of Police Shatrujeet Kapur and Rohtak Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarniya, accusing them of caste-based discrimination, Hindustan Times reported.
In a letter to the chief minister, Kumar's wife highlighted that her husband's note “explicitly names the individuals responsible for creating an atmosphere of harassment, humiliation, and mental torture, which directly led to this tragic act,” ANI reported.
A first information report was registered by Chandigarh Police on Friday under charges of abetment to suicide and provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act against those named in the note, The Hindu reported.
A six-member Special Investigation Team has also been set up to investigate the matter.
Besides, the Haryana government has replaced Bijarniya as Rohtak's superintendent of police, appointing Surinder Singh Bhoria in his place, The Hindu reported.
In his previous postings too, Kumar had on several occasions challenged his own department and made allegations of caste discrimination. In 2008, the officer, who belonged to a Scheduled Caste, had approached the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, alleging that he was being harassed by a senior official.
During last year's Lok Sabha election, he had approached the Election Commission against the chief electoral officer, alleging bias against Dalit officers.
