Cuban Accused Of Beheading Indian-Origin Motel Owner In Texas May Not Face Death Penalty
Yordanis Cobos-Martinez, the man accused of the brutal beheading of his Indian-origin employer at a Dallas motel, will not face the death penalty, according to prosecutors in the Dallas County District Attorney's Office.
The Dallas Express reported that DA John Creuzot's office has decided against pursuing the death penalty for Cobos-Martinez, limiting potential punishment to life without parole. Prosecutors indicated the stance during a recent court hearing, but reserved the right to reconsider by January 8 amid ongoing investigation. The move has triggered criticism, given the crime's brutality and the suspect's immigration status.

The attack occurred on September 10 this year at Downtown Suites Dallas, where 37-year-old Cobos-Martinez, a Cuban national, argued with 50-year-old manager Chandramouli Nagamallaiah over a broken washing machine. Surveillance footage shows Cobos-Martinez following Nagamallaiah outside, wielding a machete, and severing his head in front of the victim's wife and son, who tried to intervene. He then kicked the head into the parking lot past witnesses before tossing it into a dumpster and fleeing briefly.
According to CNN, Cobos-Martinez entered the US illegally and faced a removal order to Cuba, but was released on supervision in January 2025 after Cuba refused him due to his history. Prior incidents include a 2017 Florida grand theft auto arrest (dropped), a naked carjacking attempt in California leading to a false imprisonment conviction, and assaulting a jailer in Texas while charged with indecency with a child. ICE lodged a detainer post-arrest for deportation after trial.
Condemning the incident, US President Donald Trump had slammed his predecessor Joe Biden's immigration policy. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump had said: “The time for being soft on these Illegal Immigrant Criminals is OVER under my watch." He added: “This criminal, who we have in custody, will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the Law. He will be charged with murder in the first degree!"
DA Faces Heat
According to Dallas Express, DA John Creuzot—dubbed “Let-em-Go Creuzot" by critics—is infamous for being soft on crime.

A 2022 review found that more than half of all individuals accused of violent offences in Dallas were released from custody. The data showed particularly high release rates among certain categories of offenders—roughly three-quarters of people charged with gun-related violations, close to two-thirds of suspects booked for aggravated assault, and about one-third of those facing murder charges.
In 2024, Creuzot faced heavy criticism for failing to prosecute a suspect who was charged with sexually assaulting and trafficking a 15-year-old girl.
