Croatian Allrounder Breaks World Record, Becomes Youngest Ever Captain In International Cricket History
Zach Vukusic might be just 17 years old, but he has already become part of international cricket history. The Croatian allrounder on Thursday walked out to lead his side against Cyprus during their ongoing T20I bilateral series with Cyprus at home. And he thus became the youngest ever to lead an international team in cricket history at the age of 17 years and 311 days.
Vukusic thus broke the earlier record of Noman Amjad who captain France in a T20I at the age of 18 years and 24 days against Czech Republic in July 2022.
Among the Test playing nations, the record his held by star Afghanistan legspinner Rashid Khan who was 19 years and 165 days when he captained his nation during a T20I match against Scotland in March 2018.
Five youngest captains in international cricket history
It wasn't though a happy outing for captain Vukusic as the two matches that Croatia played on Thursday against Cyprus, his team lost both and by handsome margins.
In the first contest, Cyprus racked up a mammoth 213/3 in 20 overs at the Mladost Cricket Ground in Zagreb. In reply, Croatia were limited to 155/6 with the visitors securing a 58-run win.
In the second contest, Croatia batted first and were bowled out for 132. The below part target gave no headache to Cyprus as they overhauled it in 15.5 overs for a seven-wicket triumph.
On an individual level though, Vukusic performed well with both the bat and the ball. In the series opener, he was expensive in his four-over spell, conceding 41 runs for one wicket. With the bat though, he top-scored for his team with a 32-ball 43.

In the second contest, he made 19-ball 23 from no.3 and later returned bowling figures of 2/10 from three overs.
