‘Cried Like a Child’: Businessman Says He Begged Actor Rajpal Yadav To Return His Money
Actor Rajpal Yadav is set to walk out of Tihar Jail on Wednesday after the Delhi High Court granted him interim bail in a long-running Rs 9-crore debt case.
Following the court's decision, businessman Madhav Gopal Agrawal, who claims to have lent Rs 5 crore to the actor, has spoken publicly about the dispute for the first time.
In an interview with News Pinch, Agrawal detailed his association with Yadav, the circumstances under which the loan was given, and the events that led to prolonged litigation spanning over a decade.
Agrawal, a director at M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd, said he first met Yadav through former MP Mithilesh Kumar Katheria.
According to him, the actor approached him seeking financial help for his 2012 film Ata Pata Laapata, claiming the project was close to completion and would collapse without immediate funding.
The businessman alleged that the money was extended strictly as a loan and not an investment. He said the agreement clearly stated that repayment would not be linked to the film's commercial performance, censor certification, or release.
“There was a fixed amount and a fixed timeline. Rajpal Yadav also gave a personal guarantee," Agrawal claimed.
Agrawal further alleged that when repayment was delayed, he repeatedly approached the actor.
“I went to his house and cried in front of him like a child. I had borrowed money from others to help him. I kept begging him to at least give me a date for repayment or to finalise a new agreement," he said.
He also claimed that when he initially refused to extend further funds, Yadav's wife Radha sent him multiple emotional messages requesting help, after which he agreed to continue supporting the project.
According to Agrawal, when the film's music was launched by megastar Amitabh Bachchan, he realised that as per the agreement, the film's negatives and proceeds were to be handed over upon completion. He then approached the court, leading to a temporary stay on the film's release.
Agrawal said the stay was later lifted after Yadav assured him that the dues would be cleared post-release.
However, the film failed at the box office, and the promised payments never materialised. In 2013, he again moved the court, following which a settlement amount of Rs 10.40 crore was agreed upon.
Despite multiple cheques being issued, Agrawal claimed all of them were dishonoured.
“I am a businessman. I am not interested in anyone's downfall. I only want my money back," Agrawal said, adding that repeated defaults left him with no option but to pursue legal remedies.
The case has continued since then, ultimately leading to Yadav's imprisonment earlier this year before the High Court granted him interim relief.
