Creating A Festive Schedule: Managing Celebrations, Sleep And Nutrition

Indian festivals are great not only because they are celebrations but also because they are a state of mind. They symbolise the coming together of families, sharing and enjoying sweets and delicacies, and longer nights filled with laughter and joy. However, amidst all the festivities, one thing that often gets neglected is our daily health routine.

Dr. Pratayksha Bhardwaj, World Record Holder, Dietician, and Weight Management Expert, shares all you need to know:

1. Begin with Balanced Mornings

The way you start your day determines the momentum for the rest of it. During festive weeks, many people tend to skip breakfast or begin their day with leftover treats from the night before.

Instead, start your morning with a protein and fibre-rich breakfast such as boiled eggs, paneer, vegetable poha, Greek yoghurt, or a nut-and-seed smoothie. Doing so helps maintain stable blood sugar levels and prevents early energy dips.

Pro tip: Begin your day with a glass of lemon water with chia seeds to stay hydrated and improve digestion.

2. Make Nutrition Work With the Festivities, Not Against It

It's unrealistic and frankly unfair to expect anyone to completely give up festive foods. The key is portion control and smart pairing. Instead of indulging in multiple heavy meals throughout the day, plan light, balanced meals around the main celebration feast.

That way, you can enjoy the best of both worlds, delicious food and good health.

3. Prioritise Hydration

In all the socialising, water often takes a back seat. One of the main causes of fatigue and dull skin during the festive season is dehydration.

Aim for at least 8–10 glasses of water a day. If plain water feels monotonous, infuse it with mint, cucumber, or fruit for a refreshing twist.

If you're drinking alcohol, alternate each drink with a glass of water to stay hydrated and reduce hangover fatigue the next morning.

4. Make Sleep Your Priority

Late-night parties and early morning routines can wreak havoc on your sleep. Lack of rest not only causes tiredness but also raises cortisol (the stress hormone) levels, increasing cravings and lowering immunity.

Tip: Create a bedtime ritual with a cup of warm turmeric milk or herbal tea. This helps your digestive system relax and signals your body that it's time to sleep.

5. Keep Moving

The party schedule might not allow for long workouts, but movement is non-negotiable. A 20–30 minute walk, dancing, or a short yoga session can make a big difference.

Physical activity helps balance blood sugar levels, improves digestion, and reduces stress — especially when your eating habits are less disciplined than usual.

Think of it as your party detox, not in a strict sense, but as a gift to your body.

6. Don't Neglect Your Gut Health

Festive foods are often rich, oily, and sugary and this can take a toll on digestion. Regularly consuming probiotics and fibre-rich foods will keep your digestive system in check and prevent bloating or discomfort.

Include buttermilk, yoghurt, fermented foods, and seasonal fruits like guava and pomegranate to support your gut health.

7. Be Your Own Best Friend

Festivals are meant to be enjoyed not dreaded. A few extra calories won't undo months of healthy habits, but guilt and stress can.

Don't punish yourself for indulging in a sweet or sleeping late. Instead, balance it out the next day with more water, a bit of extra movement, and sufficient rest.

Being healthy doesn't mean being perfect, it means being consistent, adaptable, and kind to yourself.

The festive season can truly be the best time of the year if you stop seeing it as a threat to your health. With mindful choices, good sleep, enough hydration, and a bit of daily movement, you can celebrate wholeheartedly without feeling drained later.
