Corning exec Andrew Beck says everyone’s eyes are on India market
Mobile phone OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) are keeping an eagle eye on Corning's investments and plans for India, attentive to all that is happening in the region with the changes in trade policy across the globe, Andrew Beck, vice president and general manager of the firm's Gorilla Glass division, said on Thursday.
Examples of mobile phone OEMs include the likes of Samsung, Xiaomi, and Huawei that design, manufacture, and sell their smartphones and devices under their brand name.
"India now is the second largest production hub in the world," he said. "Everyone's eyes are on India and what the opportunities are here and so the reception we're getting is a lot of interest. As the very first one in India (to set up a cover glass finishing facility), people are watching to see where it goes. Our intent is to drive this as a world class manufacturing facility. They're very excited to see that come to life."
Beck is on his maiden visit to India for the inauguration of the Bharat Innovative Glass Technologies (BIG Tech) facility on Friday. The Corning Gorilla Glass finishing facility with Optiemus Infracom will deliver high-quality cover-glass components for the mobile consumer electronics industry. Corning's renowned Gorilla Glass cover material has been designed into more than eight billion devices by over 45 major brands.
"Initially, our production will be primarily focused on mobile phones to support the infrastructure that's already here in India around mobile phones," Beck explained. "But our capability will be such that we can do strengthened cover glass for all mobile consumer electronic devices - be it your watch, your mobile phone, a tablet or even touchscreen notebooks. And then, we'll really just look at opportunities across the value chain."
Located at SIPCOT Pillaipakkam Industrial Park in the Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, the facility will have a capacity of 30 million pieces of cover glass in its first phase of production. Beck said the building has been completed, equipment moved in and the company is readying to ramp production in the first half of 2026.
Though the primary focus is supporting India's growing domestic manufacturing hub, the output will find its way to global markets too.
"Initially, our hope is to support this growing ecosystem here in India, but those phones also support the global market," he said. "Even from the beginning, those phones will be going throughout the world. We will certainly export if we can, where we can. But primarily, we'll be focused on growing this increasingly large India hub of manufacturing."
The BIG Tech facility happens to be Corning's first-ever direct investment in cover glass finishing. Beck said India was picked as the destination of choice over the likes of Vietnam or China owing to the opportunity it presented for the company to differentiate itself while also expanding its footprint in a large manufacturing market that was "untapped and underinvested" in this space. He added that the facility was poised for multiple phases of expansion.
"All of those trends came together perfectly to make it clear that India was the right place to invest," he said. "There's an opportunity to expand just beyond mobile phones to all consumer electronics. That would be the first phase. And then, from there we'll look for opportunities across the value chain. Our goal is to partner and support India's aspirations to grow in the component space. So, if there are opportunities to make other components, then I think we would like to explore that."
