Congress Accuses Punjab Govt Of 'Drug Delivery In 5 Minutes', AAP Hits Back
Former Punjab Chief Minister and Congress leader Charanjit Singh Channi attacked the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led government in the state, alleging that the law and order situation had deteriorated and drugs were being delivered within minutes.
In a video, Channi said the law and order situation was particularly bad in Jalandhar, and everyone was living in fear of being looted or shot. “The situation of narcotics is so bad that they are being delivered within five minutes after a phone call, and no one is there to stop it," he told reporters.
In another video, s seen interacting with two individuals who allege that drug peddlers are openly operating across Punjab and can deliver narcotics in five minutes. The individuals also accused police of inaction against drug traffickers, who are often released soon after arrests.
One of the individuals narrated how his relative overdosed on drugs. Despite being identified and arrested, the accused drug peddler was released even before the family of the victim could perform the last rites. They also said the drug problem in Punjab had worsened since the government's “Yuddh Nashian Virudh" (War Against Drugs) campaign.
The AAP gave a sharp response to Channi's allegations, accusing him of irresponsibly promoting drug peddlers by publicising such claims, NDTV reported. AAP leaders argued that rather than supporting the government's crackdown on narcotics, the former chief minister was creating fear and inadvertently strengthening the network of drug suppliers.
The tense exchange brought the spotlight on Punjab's persistent drug problem, which continues to affect a large section of its youth and posing a major social and public health challenge. Widespread availability of narcotics, unemployment, and cross-border smuggling have contributed to rising addiction levels, particularly in rural areas.
