Common Eye Problems Doctors Are Seeing More Frequently in Young Adults
Screens are everywhere. One cannot escape it. From the tiny screen on your wristwatch to phones being an extension of your arm and the laptop being indispensable for work. Binge watching sessions during the weekends are lauded, and ranking high on gaming systems is the newest way to relax. Even if you want to read a book, people now prefer e-books on their tablets. For many parents, placing their children in front of a screen, educational or otherwise, is the only way they get some time to themselves and to get their errands done. With trends like doomscrolling, bed rotting and revenge procatiantion having both the old and young in a grip, screens are here to stay.
So, it is no surprise that it is not just older adults walking into eye clinics anymore. Increasingly, doctors are seeing young professionals, students, and even teenagers complaining of eye discomfort that was once uncommon at their age. The reasons aren’t surprising. We’re spending more hours glued to screens, stepping outdoors less often, and pushing our eyes harder than we realise.
One of the most common complaints is digital eye strain. It usually starts subtly slight discomfort, maybe a headache by evening, but builds over time. People often describe it as tired, heavy after a long day of work or scrolling. Blurred vision, dryness, and even neck pain can tag along. The problem isn’t just screen time itself, but how we use screens. Rarely blinking, staring continuously without breaks, and poor lighting all add up.
Closely tied to this is dry eye syndrome, which doctors say they’re diagnosing more frequently in young adults. It sounds like something that should affect older people, but that’s changing. Air-conditioned offices, long hours in front of laptops, and reduced blinking while using phones all reduce the natural moisture in our eyes. Many people notice a gritty feeling, redness, or a strange burning sensation by the end of the day. Ironically, some even experience excessive watering, because the eyes are trying to compensate.
Another condition quietly on the rise is early-onset myopia, or nearsightedness. More young adults are finding themselves needing glasses earlier than expected, or noticing their prescription increasing year after year. Less time spent outdoors and more time focusing on near objects—phones, tablets, laptops—seem to be major contributors. It’s not uncommon now to hear someone say their number has changed twice in just a couple of years.
Then there are contact lens-related issues. While lenses are convenient, many users stretch wear time beyond recommended hours or skip proper cleaning routines. This can lead to irritation, infections, or even small injuries to the cornea. Some people ignore the early warning signs—redness, discomfort, or light sensitivity—until it becomes harder to manage.
Doctors are also seeing a rise in allergic eye conditions, especially in urban areas. Pollution, dust, and seasonal changes can trigger itching, redness and swelling. Many young adults end up rubbing their eyes frequently, which only worsens the problem. It’s a small habit, but can lead to bigger issues over time.
What’s interesting is how easily these problems slip into daily life without much attention. A late-night binge session, working through lunch without stepping away from the laptop, scrolling in bed with the lights off, these habits feel normal now. But the eyes don’t quite agree.
The good news? Most of these issues are manageable, even preventable, with small changes. Something as simple as the 20-20-20 rule, looking away from your screen every 20 minutes at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds, can make a noticeable difference. Staying hydrated, adjusting screen brightness, and making a conscious effort to blink more often also help.
Regular eye check-ups matter too, even if your vision seems fine. Many young people delay visits until discomfort becomes unavoidable, but early care can prevent long-term problems.
At the end of the day, our eyes are working overtime to keep up with how we live. Paying a little attention now, just a bit can go a long way in keeping them comfortable and healthy for years ahead.
