Cloudflare’s second outage in a month leaves apps and users in limbo

Cloudflare, one of the world's largest internet infrastructure providers, was down again, marking its second major global outage in less than a month. The disruption, ongoing Friday, has affected hundreds of online services, including trading platforms like Zerodha, Angel One, and Groww, where users reported problems logging in, placing orders, and accessing market data. AI tools such as Claude and Perplexity, travel platforms like MakeMyTrip, and even Google Meet users struggled to connect, leaving teachers, office teams, and students in limbo.
Cloudflare said the issues are linked to scheduled maintenance at its Detroit and Chicago datacentres, with traffic temporarily rerouted. The Detroit datacentre maintenance runs from 2:30 pm to 6:30 pm IST, while the Chicago site is being worked on from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm IST. While services are gradually stabilising, platforms continue monitoring for residual issues.
The company added that it is investigating issues with its Dashboard and related Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). Customers using the Dashboard or Cloudflare APIs are impacted as requests might fail and errors may be displayed, the company said on its status page.
This is the second global disruption for Cloudflare in under a month. On November 18, a “latent software flaw” triggered widespread outages while the company was performing scheduled datacentre maintenance. That event temporarily affected X (formerly Twitter), ChatGPT, fintech platforms, and multiple ecommerce sites. Users who experienced it described frozen screens, failed payments, and inaccessible apps — a sudden reminder of how dependent the internet has become on a handful of providers.
A pattern of outages
Cloudflare's outage comes amid a spate of high-profile cloud failures. In late October, Amazon Web Services (AWS) experienced a major global disruption, affecting Snapchat, Slack, Reddit, and several Indian fintech apps. Users were unable to send messages, log in, make payments, or access real-time data. Days later, Microsoft Azure suffered a global incident that stalled Microsoft 365 apps and disrupted airline check-ins, including at Alaska Airlines.Trading platforms also bore the brunt. Zerodha and Angel One users found themselves unable to access market data or place trades during live market hours, sparking complaints on social media and temporary delays in trading activity.
Why these outages happen
The problem lies in the growing centralization of the internet. Companies like Cloudflare, AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud provide backend infrastructure, content delivery, and security for thousands of apps. A small misconfiguration, software bug, or maintenance error can ripple globally, affecting services from fintech and gaming to AI tools and travel apps.Erie Meyer, former CTO of the US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, told NBC News, “This spate of outages has been uniquely terrible. It's like what we were told Y2K would be like — and it's happening more often.”
Cloudflare itself acknowledged the November 18 outage was exacerbated by a “latent software flaw” and ongoing scheduled maintenance. The company apologised and confirmed the issue was resolved.
The human cost of digital fragility
For everyday users, these outages are more than technical glitches. They disrupt work, school, communication, payments, and travel, reminding people just how dependent daily life has become on a few internet giants. Social media posts over the past month reflect growing frustration and anxiety as multiple outages — Cloudflare, AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud — have made the internet feel unpredictably fragile.What's next
Cloudflare says it is actively managing traffic and monitoring affected systems while maintenance continues. Services are gradually stabilizing, but users may experience slower responses or intermittent failures throughout the day. The incident underscores a key reality: the modern internet, despite appearing limitless and decentralized, is increasingly vulnerable to single points of failure.As Cloudflare and other cloud providers work to reinforce resilience, users are left hoping that downtime — whether on trading platforms, AI tools, or video calls — will be brief and rare.
