‘Claude Fable 5 Is Enough’: Reddit User Says Company Laid Off 62 Workers, Kept Just 8
Artificial intelligence is changing the way many companies work, but it has also increased concerns about job security. One Reddit post has sparked discussion after an employee claimed that most of their development team was laid off, with company leaders saying AI could now handle much of the remaining work.
The post quickly drew attention from developers and tech professionals, many of whom debated whether AI was really replacing jobs or simply being used as a reason for workforce cuts.
Employee Shares Layoff Claim
The Reddit user wrote, “Nearly entire team of ~70 laid off citing efficiency from Claude Fable, 8 of us remain. This is insane."
The employee claimed they worked at a mid-sized services company that had employed many developers before 2023 but had not hired anyone since 2025. According to the post, the company had already been getting fewer projects, making layoffs seem likely.
The user wrote, “Mid-sized services company that employed a lot of devs pre-2023, hasn’t hired since 2025. The writing was already on the wall because the number of projects drastically reduced, but today morning I get to know they laid off over 90% of the dev team."
The Redditor further claimed that company leaders told the remaining employees they would now rely heavily on AI. “CXOs basically saying Claude Fable 5 is enough for those of us remaining (supposedly the top performers) to handle the projects the company has left."
The user also shared that recent improvements in generative AI had changed the way they looked at the technology. They said they had earlier believed “AI is just fancy autocomplete," but recent developments had made them rethink that view and raised concerns about the future of software development careers.
Reddit Users Weigh In
The post led to a wide discussion, with many users sharing different opinions on AI, layoffs and the future of tech jobs.
A user wrote, “For replacing a team of 70 people, the token cost for fable is going to be insane. Anyways, start saving money and buy some land in rural areas before it gets expensive too."
Another commented, “‘Layoffs due to AI’ is management speak for a good PR excuse for downsizing. Citing operational challenges isn’t something we like to do (I’m a CTO, this is commonly discussed in our circles). Your company wanted to downsize for some reason, and it sounds better to say ‘we use Claude now’, rather than ‘the road ahead looks rough’."
A person encouraged developers not to lose hope, writing, “First off – it’s incredibly harder for ‘new’ software developers to get in. Existing software developers with experience in the basics have at least some advantage. Software – even now – needs a lot of shaping and review before it is committed… Try to move up the value chain… Just don’t diminish your own self-worth in your mind. All the best!"
Another person simply wrote, “This is absolutely brutal, man, I’m sorry. Good luck to those 8 remaining developers."
