China Is Banning Influencers

China Is Banning Influencers, Deleting Their Accounts On Social Media, Here’s Why
China has launched a sweeping crackdown on social media influencers—and it’s already reshaping the creator economy. According to media reports, thousands of accounts have been suspended, flagged, or placed under review across platforms in recent weeks, after authorities tightened rules on what influencers can say online.
This targets the creators who were offering investment tips, medical advice, “health hacks," and other information without any professional qualifications.
From skincare routines disguised as dermatology advice to viral “get rich quick" strategies, the unregulated influencer space has grown rapidly. Now, China is stepping in—and drawing a hard line.
China’s No Credentials, No Content Rule
At the centre of this crackdown is a regulation introduced by the country’s top internet regulator, Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC). Under these rules, influencers who speak on sensitive or specialised topics such as healthcare, finance, law, or education must now prove that they are qualified to do so.
This means having relevant degrees, certifications, or professional licences. If they fail to meet these standards, they are no longer allowed to post or livestream advice in these categories.
Importantly, the responsibility does not lie with creators alone. Social media platforms are also being held accountable and are expected to actively verify credentials and remove non-compliant content. Failure to do so could result in penalties for the platforms themselves.
Why China Is Cracking Down
The crackdown is largely driven by growing concerns around misinformation and its real-world consequences.
In recent years, social media in China, much like elsewhere, has seen a surge in influencers sharing advice on everything from stock investments to skincare routines. While some content may seem harmless, authorities argue that unverified guidance can mislead users and, in some cases, cause financial loss or health risks.
By enforcing credential-based content, regulators aim to improve the overall quality and reliability of information circulating online. The move is also intended to protect users, particularly younger audiences, who are more likely to trust and act on influencer recommendations without questioning their authenticity.
China’s Tight Grip On Social Media
This move is not an isolated action but part of China’s broader framework of strict internet regulation.
The Cyberspace Administration of China plays a central role in monitoring and controlling online content across the country.
Over the years, it has introduced multiple campaigns aimed at “cleaning up" the digital space by targeting misinformation, harmful trends, and content that could disrupt social order.
Social media platforms in China operate under clear and often stringent guidelines. They are required not only to remove problematic content but also to monitor and regulate what appears on their platforms proactively.
Campaigns like “Qinglang" have repeatedly focused on curbing online excesses, from celebrity culture to misleading information.
This latest crackdown on influencers fits neatly into that larger strategy—one that prioritises control, order, and what authorities define as credible information.
Control Vs Credibility: The Ongoing Debate
As with many such regulations, the move has sparked a wider debate. Supporters argue that it is a necessary intervention in an age where misinformation can spread rapidly and influence real-life decisions.
Ensuring that only qualified individuals dispense advice, they say, could make social media safer and more trustworthy.
Critics, however, see it differently. They believe such rules could restrict freedom of expression and limit the diversity of voices online. There are also concerns about how “qualification" is defined and who gets to decide what counts as credible information.
