China Eastern Airlines to restart Shanghai-Delhi flights from November 9
State-backed China Eastern Airlines will commence flights between Shanghai and New Delhi from November 9 with thrice weekly flights, CCTV reported on Saturday (October 18, 2025).
The flight will be operated by an Airbus A330-200 wide-body aircraft on every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday. Other Chinese carriers are expected to announce their schedules too,
The announcements come a little over a fortnight after the Indian government issued a press statement on the decision taken by the two sides to resume air connectivity after five years, following which IndiGo announced flights from Kolkata to Guangzhou from October 26 and Air India said it would restart flights to Shanghai before the end of the year.
DGCA officials said there are also requests from other Chinese carriers, such as Air China (Beijing-New Delhi flights) and Shandong (Kunming -Delhi flights), for passenger services as well as China Southern (Guangzhou -Delhi) and Sichuan Airlines (Chengdu-Delhi) for cargo services.
According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), prior to the disruption, India–China passenger traffic grew at double-digit rates and had doubled between 2011 and 2019, reaching nearly 10 lakh annual passengers. This translated into roughly a dozen daily flights.
IATA said the volume of direct travel between the world's two most populous countries is modest as compared to 330 bi-directional daily flights between China and Japan and highlighted the untapped potential of the India-China corridor.
