MLS: Chicago Fire Weather Later Inter Miami Fight To Seal Playoff Spot As Messi Blanks

MLS side Inter Miami fell to a 3-5 defeat at the hands of Chicago Fire at the Chase Stadium on Wednesday as the Fire withstood a second-half fight back from the Herons to secure the win and seal their berth in the playofff spot for the first time since 2017.

Goals from Dje D'Avilla, Jonathan Dean, Rominigue Kouame, Justin Pledger Reynolds and Brian Gutierrez outbid strikes from Tomas Aviles and a Luis Suarez brace.

Lionel Messi was scoreless for the second consecutive game as Inter Miami, which has already secured a playoff spot, fell to 16-8-7. This loss diminished Inter Miami's chances of winning the Supporters' Shield. The Philadelphia Union can claim the regular-season title with a win over New York City FC.

“This defeat is exclusively my responsibility. It wasn't the players; it was the strategy I chose," said Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano after the game.

The Fire took an early lead with Dje D'Avilla scoring a header in the 11th minute and Jonathan Dean adding another goal on a breakaway in the 31st.

Miami reduced the deficit to 2-1 when Tomás Avilés scored in the 39th minute, but Chicago's Romingue Kouamé restored the two-goal advantage just before halftime.

Suárez brought Inter Miami closer with a goal in the 57th minute and equalised the game at 3-3 with a goal assisted by Jordi Alba in the 74th.

Justin Reynolds put Chicago back in front with a tap-in at the back post in the 80th minute, and Brian Gutierrez secured the win with a powerful shot from outside the box in the 83rd minute.

The game was originally scheduled for August 30 but was postponed when Inter Miami made it to the Leagues Cup Final, where they lost to Seattle 3-0.

Miami made five changes to the lineup from their 1-1 tie with Toronto on Saturday, replacing all defenders except Jordi Alba. The tie with Toronto ended Inter Miami's three-game MLS winning streak.
