Chess Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi’s Post On Delhi’s Hazardous AQI: ‘We Are Slowly Being Poisoned, No One Cares’

The air quality of Delhi-NCR has deteriorated once again, sparking a debate on social media. A dense fog settled over parts of the national capital on Saturday, January 17, worsening air quality and reducing visibility. Amid the city's deteriorating Air Quality Index (AQI), Indian chess grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi took a dig at the Delhi administration and asked if no one cared about the health of the public.

In a post on X, Gujrathi dropped a screenshot of Delhi's air quality, with the AQI reaching 598 or hazardous levels. Another picture compared the average air quality in India with other countries like Pakistan, Nepal and North Macedonia, showing how the country had ‘hazardous' levels of air pollution. Gujrathi wrote, “We are slowly being poisoned and no one cares? Shouldn't solving this be the top priority?"

Vidit Gujrathi's comments come just days after Danish shuttler Anders Antonsen said that he opted out of the ongoing India Open due to the pollution levels in Delhi, adding that the city is not fit to host a badminton tournament.

Indian Grandmaster's Comments Spark Debate

Several people reacted to the comment and pointed out why the air pollution crisis in the national capital remains a concern. “The “CHALTA HAI ATTITUDE" had done more damage to the common people than anything else. Worst thing: People in power are aware of & take complete leverage of it. Be it the hazardous Delhi air quality, Thar menace, rising inflation & crowded stations nothing will change," one user noted.

Another account called it “no less than a pandemic-level emergency" that people were ignoring.

Some users had a pessimistic outlook on the crisis. “No one cares to be honest. You are on your own. Take care of yourself and your health."

Sharing screenshots of the AQI in cities like Mumbai, Chennai and Bengaluru, one user pointed out that the problem was “not just Delhi, it's across the whole India."

“I've noticed that people tweet about these things only while the problem is live. It gets forgotten in a month or two when things get better. And it comes up again only in Nov-Jan," another remarked.

Some people highlighted how the general public's response to air pollution differs across regions. “I was in Hong Kong a few weeks back. AQI was ~ 95-100. People were wearing pollution masks," a user recalled.

Another claimed, “Recently I learned that in Bangkok (a city of over 10 million people) when AQI hits 150, people cancel plans, schools shut, travel out of the city if they can, wear masks and almost panic. In Delhi, when AQI hits 500, people are like: “Nice weather. Kal toh 800 tha."

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), an AQI of 368 was recorded in the city, falling in the ‘Very Poor' category. Authorities reimposed GRAP-III restrictions across Delhi-NCR, leading to curbs on construction and other pollution-generating activities.

Some of the worst-affected areas in the morning were Anand Vihar, Patparganj, Chandni Chowk, Nehru Nagar, Vivek Vihar, and Jahangirpuri – all of which recorded AQI levels above 400.
