ChatGPT To Show You Ads Based On Your Chats With AI? Here’s What We Know

OpenAI is offering free access to ChatGPT for many users but the company is quietly building a product that could eventually earn them a lot of money. When you talk about AI, most companies refute plans to bring ads but as Google has shown with the AI search version, ads are inevitable and OpenAI could go one step further by using your chats with the AI chatbot to offer targeted ads.

The company is looking to make this model work within ChatGPT and use the memory feature where people can browse through their earlier chats with the AI chatbot when they login.

ChatGPT Ads: Scary But Hard To Avoid

The report comes from The Information, which quotes sources from within OpenAI and the plans to bring ads to ChatGPT are well and truly moving the levels. Memory acts like website cookies for AI chatbots, and if OpenAI does access the data to target users with personal ads, the whole dynamics of AI changes, at least for their business fortunes.

We are not sure about the actual thought process that the company will rely on for this decision but Sam Altman and Co. clearly need to bring more money to keep the AI data centres running.

Using your personal data to show ads is a well versed strategy that all tech brands have adopted over the years. OpenAI doing it is not shocking by any means, but using really personal conversations to plug product placement just feels unwise, at least till AI becomes integral to everyone's digital workflow. Altman has been asked about bringing ads to ChatGPT and during an interview in 2024 he claimed ads will be a “last resort for us."

So, has OpenAI reached that stage in its evolution, not really, and that means all the calls and feedback over ads in ChatGPT should ideally take a back seat at least for the next 6 to 12 months, if not more.

Meanwhile, the company is resorting to the best and easy way to get more users on ChatGPT. The free ChatGPT Go offer is coming to Indian users from November 4, 2025 which is already the go-to AI chatbot for people in the country. You can access the affordable ChatGPT plan for free over 12 months and you don't need to fulfill any special criteria to be eligible for this offer.

Google has offered a similar 12 month free Gemini AI Pro deal but for students in the country, while you have Perplexity signing up with telecom operator Airtel to give free Pro subscription to anyone with an Airtel prepaid/postpaid connection or even the Wi-Fi/DTH network.
