ChatGPT now lets you control warmth, enthusiasm, & emojis; here’s why it matters
OpenAI rolled out new personalisation controls for ChatGPT on Saturday. These will now allow users to fine-tune how the AI assistant sounds, down to its warmth, enthusiasm, and emoji usage.
This update is set to give users more direct control over the chatbot's tone, possibly addressing the popular debate around ChatGPT's sycophantic and overly flattering conversations.
How to access the personalisation controls
Under the personalisation menu in My ChatGPT, users can change settings, within the characteristics section, for a slew of categories such as warm, enthusiasm, headers & lists, and emojis.
Warmth governs how friendly and approachable responses feel. Enthusiasm sets the energy level of replies. Emoji use determines how often emojis appear. Headers and lists determine whether you see more bulleted and numbered formatting than paras or not.
Each can be set to More, Less, or Default, allowing users to dial in a communication style that suits their needs.
Why do these matter?
These settings build on OpenAI's existing tone presets, such as Professional, Candid, and Quirky, introduced last month. Together, they allow layered customisation, for example, a professional tone with higher enthusiasm for coaching, or a quirky tone with minimal emoji use for creative writing. This has use-cases for building better APIs for applications that integrate these chatbots. For instance, a mental health app may wish to tweak these presets according to their customer base.
This also helps ChatGPT fine-tune both the responses it delivers and the inputs it receives, nudging it closer to its goal of becoming an indispensable, everyday assistant, on par with Siri or Gemini.
Data from the mobile app analytics firm AppFigures indicates that ChatGPT became the world's most downloaded app in November with 43 million new installs, and generated an estimated $183 million in after-fee revenue during the same month. These minute personalisation controls are expected to drive higher in-app purchases and subscription growth.
Tone has been a sensitive issue for OpenAI throughout 2025. Earlier this year, the company rolled back an update after users complained the chatbot had become too sycophantic. Later, GPT-5 was adjusted to feel “warmer and friendlier” following feedback that it had swung too far in the opposite direction. The new controls signal a shift away from one-size-fits-all tone updates toward user-driven customisation.
