CBSE board exams 2026: From two board exams a year to new attendance rules, all major changes explained
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced several updates for the Class 10, 12 board examinations this year. These include the introduction of a two-exam system, early publication of date sheets, and other key revisions.
If you are appearing for board exams this year, or next year, this article has all the important information you should be aware about.
One of the most significant changes is the adoption of a dual-session board exam format. Starting in 2026, the board will now conduct two exams: first in February–March and the second in May. This model replaces the earlier supplementary system. Instead, it provides students with another attempt within the same academic year.
The February exam will be mandatory for all students, while the May session will be optional for those seeking improvement. The best of the two scores will be reflected on the marksheet. Results for February (term 1 exam) will be declared in April, and for May (term 2 exam), they will be out in June. This shift aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP). Students will be allowed to improve their performance in up to three subjects—science, mathematics, social science, and languages.
Students should note that despite changes in structure, the syllabus and examination pattern remain unchanged. Students will continue to be assessed on the full annual syllabus both in February and May.
For the first time, the Board released the examination date sheet in October. Initially, a
tentative datesheet was released
. A month later, the board issued final date sheet for Classes 10 and 12 board exams 2026.
This was done to ensure that all other exam conducting bodies can plan their exam schedules accordingly, and avoid clashes. Once all exam conducting bodies gave a go-ahead to CBSE, the national education board re-worked the exam schedule (wherever needed) and released the finalised CBSE board exams 2026 datesheet.
The CBSE board exams datesheet was also released much in advance this year to ensure students can chalk down their study plans accordingly, and do not panic at the last minute.
CBSE has coordinated with the National Testing Agency (NTA) to ensure that board exams do not conflict with major entrance tests like the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main). Class 11 registration numbers will now be required for JEE Main registrations.
Since Class 12 students appear for JEE Main, CBSE has scheduled the last exam for Session 2 on April 9, a day before the JEE Main exam on April 10. This decision is to avoid overlap between CBSE exams and JEE Main, which previously caused stress for students preparing for both.
CBSE has also tightened eligibility requirements for board exam candidates. Students in Classes 10 and 12 must now maintain a minimum of 75 per cent attendance to be eligible for the exams. The board is closely monitoring compliance with candidate lists, subject codes, and data accuracy.
