The Closing Auction Session (CAS) framework could see a key change, with after-market orders (AMOs) likely to be accepted during the 3:15 pm to 3:20 pm transition window, according to Zee Business sources.
At present, the five-minute period between the end of continuous trading at 3:15 pm and the start of order entry for the closing auction at 3:20 pm is used as a transition period. Under the existing framework, fresh orders cannot be placed during this window.

According to Zee Business sources, brokers have been asked to align their apps and websites with the proposed change following discussions held with the regulator.
Under the proposed arrangement, orders received as AMOs between 3:15 pm and 3:20 pm could be pushed into the CAS once the auction order-entry process begins.
Sources said the changes are expected to be reflected on broker platforms after September 1, with the rollout expected to happen soon thereafter.
The move is aimed at ensuring that orders placed during the five-minute transition period do not remain outside the closing auction. Instead, these orders could become part of the CAS order pool, potentially increasing the liquidity available for price discovery.

The key objective is to improve price discovery in CAS.
Since the closing price under CAS is determined through an auction, adequate participation and liquidity are important for the mechanism to work effectively. The current five-minute transition window does not allow fresh orders to enter the system, which can limit the pool of orders available when the auction begins.
Allowing AMOs during this period could bring more orders into CAS and potentially improve the quality of the closing price, particularly in stocks where auction participation remains relatively low.
CAS was introduced on August 3 for stocks with available F&O contracts, replacing the earlier VWAP-based closing-price mechanism. Continuous trading in eligible stocks now ends at 3:15 pm, followed by the closing auction process.
Zee Business sources said the proposed change was discussed with brokers a few days ago, with market intermediaries being asked to make the necessary changes to their applications and websites.
The idea is that an investor placing an AMO after 3:15 pm and before 3:20 pm should not have to wait until the next trading session for the order to be processed. Instead, the order could be routed into CAS after the auction order-entry window opens.
The proposed change would therefore alter the current workflow around the transition period without changing the basic objective of CAS — determining a closing price through an auction-based mechanism.

The move comes at a time when SEBI is looking to improve participation in CAS. SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey has said participation is expected to increase as market participants become more familiar with the new system.
Allowing AMOs during the 3:15 pm to 3:20 pm window could provide another source of orders for the auction and, in turn, help address liquidity concerns.
For now, the proposed change is subject to implementation by the exchanges and brokers. According to Zee Business sources, investors could start seeing the required changes on broker apps and websites after September 1.
