Carlos Alcaraz Says He's Doubtful For French Open Amid Injury; Sinner's Window Widens
Vamos, Roland Garros? Maybe not, says Carlos Alcaraz.
The countdown to the French Open is on, but the defending champion might not be part of it.
The World No. 2 has cast fresh doubt over his participation in Paris, admitting he’s far from certain to be fit as the clay-court major approaches.
Injury Woes Disrupt Clay Momentum
It’s been a frustrating stretch for Alcaraz. Earlier this month, he lost the World No. 1 ranking to Jannik Sinner after falling in the Monte Carlo final — a defeat that snapped his 17-match clay-court winning streak dating back to last season’s triumphs in Rome and Paris.
Then came the bigger blow. A right wrist injury forced him out of the Barcelona Open, and he’s already confirmed he’ll skip the Madrid Open for the second straight year.
That lack of match rhythm, combined with lingering fitness concerns, has now put Roland Garros in serious doubt.
“I’d Rather Wait"
Speaking at the Laureus Sports Awards, Alcaraz made his stance clear.
“I’d rather come back a little later but in great shape than come back early, rushing around, and unwell," he said.
“God willing, I have a very long career ahead of me… pushing myself too hard at this Roland Garros could seriously harm me in future tournaments."
Waiting on Tests, Holding Onto Hope
Alcaraz admitted the next few days will be decisive.
“Well, we’ll have to wait and see. Ultimately, the next test is going to be crucial," he said.
“We have some tests coming up… from that point on, we’ll see the extent of the injury and the next steps."
What’s at Stake?
If Alcaraz misses Roland Garros or is unable to bring his best, it reshapes the entire clay-court landscape.
With Sinner in red-hot form — having clinched Monte Carlo and now eyeing a record-breaking fifth consecutive ATP title at Madrid — the absence or limitation of the Spaniard could swing the balance of power.
To defend his crown, Alcaraz needs to be at his absolute best. And right now, that’s far from certain.
