Canadian Tourists’ Sleeper-Class Train Ride In India Turns Into ‘Core Memory’ | Watch
For many travellers, a train journey in India is more than just transportation; it is a glimpse into everyday life and a chance encounter with strangers who often become temporary companions. Two Canadian tourists recently experienced this firsthand during a sleeper-class trip that turned out to be far more eventful than expected.
Kim Greenwood and her travel partner had booked an early morning train from Jalgaon Junction to Chandrapur, hoping to catch up on sleep during the seven-hour ride. However, Greenwood later realised they had not fully understood India's different ticket classes.
“One of us, me, booked an early train from Jalgaon Junction to Chandrapur in a sleeping car class, thinking we would get more sleep. It seemed logical. However, one should read more about the multiple ticket classes available on the trains in India. The sleeper seat is in 3rd class on some of the trains," she wrote in an Instagram post.
Instead of a quiet journey, the pair found themselves surrounded by curious local children who gathered around their berth as Greenwood's companion tried to rest. Rather than feeling irritated, the Canadians embraced the situation.
Greenwood described being struck by the warmth and sense of community on board. “I was so impressed, amazed and all of the great feelings one can have while watching a community work together and coexist as one large family unit. The people that amassed on our bunk were from disparate families," she wrote.
Fellow passengers shared food with the tourists some bought from onboard vendors and some brought from home. Greenwood said she was particularly touched by the cooperation and camaraderie among passengers.
“The kids loved the attraction of Canadian tourists, but watching the relationships and the level of cooperation between the locals is something that everyone should aspire to," she added.
Though neither of them managed to sleep during the journey, Greenwood said she had no regrets. “A 7-hour sleepless train ride, but wouldn't change a thing," she wrote.
The post drew widespread appreciation online, with many praising the tourists' open-minded approach.
“I really hope you enjoyed that train ride. They truly are core memories for us when we were growing up," one user commented.
Another wrote, “I love how sporty you are about all this. Most people would get upset about losing sleep. Kudos to your traveller mindset."
A third user reflected on what makes Indian train journeys special: “There is a reason people will have more stories on train journeys than on flights or buses. The way people become one big family and share stories, laughs, sorrow, and food is just amazing."
For Greenwood and her companion, what began as a plan for rest turned into an unforgettable cultural experience one they now consider a highlight of their travels in India.
