Mark Carney responded to Donald Trump's Davos remarks by saying Canada does not live because of the US, while acknowledging a strong economic and security partnership with the US.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has struck back at US President Donald Trump after the American leader claimed at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos that “Canada lives because of the United States”.
Carney, in an X post, asserted Canada's independence while still underscoring the close bilateral relationship between the two neighbours.
Quoting from Trump's address at the Davos Summit, Carney wrote on X, “Canada thrives because we are Canadian.”
He added, “Canada and the United States have built a remarkable partnership, in the economy, in security, and in rich cultural exchange. But Canada doesn't ‘live because of the United States! Canada thrives because we are Canadian.”

The post followed Trump's sharp remarks at Davos, where he accused Ottawa of being insufficiently grateful for Washington's role in its security and prosperity.
Speaking during his address at the 56th Annual WEF summit, Trump said, “Canada gets a lot of freebies from us, by the way. They should also be grateful, but they're not. I saw your prime minister yesterday; he wasn't so grateful. They should be grateful to us.”
He went on to stress what he described as Washington's strategic importance to its northern neighbour, saying, “Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.”
The exchange capped days of rhetorical sparring between the two leaders that began after Carney warned at Davos that the global order was facing a fundamental “rupture” rather than a gradual transition.
In that speech, the Canadian Prime Minister argued that middle powers such as Canada could no longer rely on the automatic protection of a US-led, rules-based system.
CARNEY OPPOSES US TARIFFS OVER GREENLAND
During his Davos appearance, Carney also took aim at Washington's use of tariffs linked to Greenland, after Trump announced levies on European allies opposed to his ambition for the United States to take over the territory.
“Canada strongly opposes tariffs over Greenland and calls for focused talks to achieve our shared objectives of security and prosperity in the Arctic,” Carney said.
Backing Denmark's sovereignty over Greenland, he reiterated that Ottawa was working to broaden its international partnerships as it navigates a complicated relationship with the Trump administration.
He also cautioned against great powers abandoning global norms, saying, “If great powers abandon even the pretence of rules and values for the unhindered pursuit of their power and interests, the gains from transactionalism will become harder to replicate.”
In his longer WEF address, Carney warned that tariffs, financial systems and supply chains were being weaponised, and said the world was entering “a harsh reality” where major powers operated with few constraints.
While acknowledging that the US-built international framework had once delivered benefits such as collective security and financial stability, he argued that the old bargain was eroding.
TRUMP WITHDRAWS CANADA'S BOARD OF PEACE INVITATION
Tensions escalated further after Trump, earlier today, announced that Canada's invitation to join his proposed ‘Board of Peace' initiative had been revoked.
In a post on his Truth Social platform addressed directly to Carney, Trump wrote, “Please let this Letter serve to represent that the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation to you regarding Canada's joining, what will be, the most prestigious Board of Leaders ever assembled, at any time.”
The move came as officials indicated that Ottawa would not pay to participate in the forum, despite Carney earlier signalling that he would accept an invitation.
Carney has continued to frame Canada as a country that values cooperation but is prepared to defend its sovereignty in an increasingly fractured world.
In one of his addresses, he had warned, “The world is more divided. Former alliances are being redefined and, in some cases, broken,” and said Canada would ramp up defence spending to “defend our sovereignty and secure our borders.”
