Byju’s Founder Byju Raveendran Sentenced To 6 Months In Jail By Singapore Court; Internet Says 'What A Downfall'
Byju Raveendran, once celebrated for building one of India’s biggest edtech companies, is now battling fresh legal trouble overseas. A Singapore court has reportedly sentenced the Byju’s founder to six months in jail in connection with a contempt case tied to non-compliance with court orders regarding his assets.
According to a Bloomberg report citing people familiar with the matter, the court found the Byju’s founder guilty of failing to comply with multiple directives regarding disclosure of his assets since April 2024. The ruling adds another layer to the deepening crisis surrounding the once high-flying edtech company that was valued at billions during its peak.
The court has reportedly directed Raveendran to surrender before authorities and pay legal expenses amounting to S$90,000 (approximately Rs 6,727,200). He has also been ordered to provide documents proving his ownership of Beeaar Investco Pte, a company that held shares in an affiliated entity.
It remains uncertain whether Raveendran is currently in Singapore or elsewhere. However, the judgment marks a major setback for the entrepreneur, who is already battling legal disputes in several countries.
Founded as Think & Learn Pvt Ltd, Byju’s grew rapidly into one of India’s most recognised startups during the online education boom. Backed by global investors and promoted as a success story in India’s startup ecosystem, the company reached massive valuations and expanded aggressively across markets.
But over the past few years, the company’s fortunes reversed amid allegations of financial mismanagement, delayed audits, layoffs, unpaid dues, mounting debt and insolvency proceedings.
The latest Singapore case is reportedly tied to legal action initiated by a subsidiary of the Qatar Investment Authority, which had invested in the company during a period when Byju’s was already downsizing operations and cutting jobs. Qatar Holdings was represented by Drew & Napier, while Byju’s Investments was represented by Fervent Chambers.
Meanwhile, the news quickly spread across social media platforms, especially Reddit, where users reacted strongly to the development. A post shared by the Reddit community @r/india titled, “Byju Raveendran sentenced to six months in jail by Singapore court," attracted widespread attention and criticism.
“Not to comment on a person’s bad time but samay ki ek aadat hai ki wo badalta zarur hai. This person had extreme ego at one point of time running a scam company that too in losses," wrote one user.
Another user commented, “They destroyed thousands of families by guilt tripping them to take loans. Most of those families didn’t have much financial literacy, one such case got viral where a single mother has sold her house to pay the loan and even after that she was getting harrassed by agents that she doesn’t care about her childs future because she is not willing to enroll her son to more premium tier course. Well fucking deserve downfall."
A third user said, “Pretend to be an untouchable cloud god, actually have gundas on payroll. The number of tech companies giving you two faced treatment is scary."
“Only 6 months?" another user asked.
One Redditor also wrote, “For a man basically running a scam, he was way too popular. I literally had friends pretending to be IIT grads calling parents and trying to get their children enrolled. How obvious scam got funded in billions explains, how dumb investors can be."
“I’d gladly fund his flight to Singapore," another comment read.
