Oil prices eased after US President Donald Trump struck a more optimistic tone on the prospects of a lasting ceasefire with Iran, offering markets a breather following weeks of volatility. Brent crude slipped toward $98 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate hovered near $93, partially reversing the previous session’s sharp gains.
The decline came after Trump indicated that Tehran may be open to conditions it had long resisted, including reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. However, Iranian officials have yet to confirm any such move, keeping traders cautious.
Despite the improved tone, diplomats across the Gulf and Europe remain guarded. Officials suggest a comprehensive US-Iran agreement could take several months to materialise, with growing calls to extend the current ceasefire to bridge the gap.
Now nearing the 50-day mark, the conflict has significantly disrupted global oil markets. Iran’s earlier move to restrict traffic through the Strait of Hormuz affected nearly a fifth of global crude flows. The situation was further strained after the US imposed a naval blockade, tightening supply and fuelling price volatility.
After weeks of sharp swings, oil markets are showing signs of stabilisation. Brent has traded within a narrower $10 range this week, compared with wild fluctuations of up to $38 seen in mid-March. Options data also point to easing volatility, with key indicators falling to their lowest levels in recent weeks.
However, markets remain sensitive to geopolitical signals. Trump’s messaging throughout the conflict has swung between escalation warnings and diplomatic optimism, often triggering abrupt price movements.
Meanwhile, a parallel 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon has offered some relief. Israel’s ongoing tensions with Hezbollah—a key Iranian ally—remain closely tied to broader de-escalation efforts, adding further complexity to the path toward a lasting agreement.
