Breast Implant vs Explant Costs: Doctors Explain Rising Trend Toward 'Natural Look'

Model-actor Sherlyn Chopra has sparked fresh public conversation around cosmetic surgery after revealing in an Instagram video that she recently underwent a breast explant procedure. Calling the decision a relief, Chopra urged young women not to “carry this burden", prompting renewed debate on why many women today are choosing to downsise or completely remove their implants.

Breast implantation, using medical-grade silicone implants to enhance the size and shape of the breasts, has long been a popular procedure among actors, models and influencers. But cosmetic surgeons say the aesthetic trend has shifted. While larger implants were once in high demand, the preference has moved toward a more natural silhouette.

Dr Raman Sharma, plastic and cosmetic surgeon at Sir Ganga Ram City Hospital, New Delhi, noted that women with naturally small breasts continue to seek augmentation, but newer choices are more conservative. “Years ago, bigger implants were fashionable. Now, most women prefer subtle enhancement, smaller implants, or even explantation," he said.

Doctors say the surge in explant procedures is driven primarily by changing beauty standards. Many women choose to replace older, larger implants with smaller ones for a lighter, more proportionate look. In medical cases, though rare, implants may rupture or develop capsular contracture, a condition where tissue around the implant hardens, leading to discomfort or pain. Otherwise, surgeons emphasise that implants are generally safe and long-lasting.

A newer option gaining momentum is the hybrid breast augmentation, which combines smaller implants with fat transfer for a more natural feel and contour. This method typically costs about Rs 1.5 lakh and takes around 2 hours. Surgeons extract fat from another part of the body, purify it, and inject it into the breasts to enhance shape and softness, an option many experts consider more natural-looking.
