Breaking The Myth: Understanding Desire And Female Sexuality During Menopause
For decades, menopause has been framed as an endpoint – a phase where vitality, sexuality, and desire quietly fade into the background. This narrative has done more harm than good. Menopause is not a loss of identity or intimacy; it is a biological transition marked by hormonal changes that can reshape how desire is experienced, not erase it. Yet silence, stigma and misinformation continue to make many women feel invisible or unsure of their sexual selves during midlife.
Today, doctors are urging a shift in perspective – one that recognises sexual health as a lifelong component of overall wellbeing, not something limited by age.
“Menopause is a biological transition marked by hormonal shifts, not a loss of desire, identity, or intimacy," says Dr Suhasini Inamdar, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Motherhood Hospitals, Bengaluru. She explains that while physical responses may change, including vaginal dryness, reduced lubrication or mood fluctuations. These are medical concerns with effective solutions.
Echoing this, Dr Nikita Maan Singh, Consultant in Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Infertility at Rainbow Children's Hospital, Bengaluru, adds, “The idea that desire simply ‘shuts down' after 45 is a stubborn myth, born more from stigma and silence than from science." She emphasises that a satisfying sexual life is not a luxury, but a key pillar of emotional, physical and relational wellbeing at every age.
Hormonal shifts during perimenopause and menopause, particularly declining estrogen and testosterone, can influence libido, arousal and comfort. “This decrease in estrogen can lead to vaginal dryness or discomfort during intercourse," explains Dr Nikita. However, she stresses that sexual wellbeing in midlife is shaped by far more than hormones alone.
Stress, sleep disruption, demanding careers, caregiving responsibilities and mental health all play a significant role. “Low desire during menopause is often transient," she notes, adding that many women report feeling sexually liberated during this phase – free from concerns about pregnancy or menstruation.
“Sexuality includes emotional connection, intimacy and the pursuit of physical pleasure," says Dr Yuvakshi Juneja, Senior Consultant at Apollo Cradle Royale, Delhi. She highlights that while hormonal changes can affect sexual functioning, they do not eliminate a woman's capacity for desire or satisfaction. “Women retain the ability to become sexually engaged and fulfilled into their 50s and 60s," she explains.
Dr Yuvakshi also points out that societal silence around menopause often leads women to internalise shame or guilt. Open conversations – with partners, peers and healthcare providers – are critical to reframing sexual dissatisfaction as a common, manageable experience rather than a personal failure.
Medical support can make a meaningful difference. “Open conversations, appropriate counselling, lifestyle adjustments and evidence-based treatments can significantly improve sexual wellbeing," says Dr Suhasini. Options range from lubricants and vaginal moisturisers to hormone therapy and non-hormonal treatments, depending on individual needs.

Dr Nikita adds that holistic care by addressing mental well-being, relationship dynamics and self-perception is equally important. Emotional intimacy, trust and non-sexual affection can deepen connection and improve sexual satisfaction for both partners.
Menopause is not an ending. Desire may evolve, but it remains valid, natural and worthy of attention. With accurate information, compassionate medical care and open dialogue, women can reclaim sexual confidence and intimacy well beyond midlife. By dismantling outdated myths and embracing a more nuanced understanding of female sexuality, menopause can become a phase of renewed self-awareness, empowerment and fulfilment.
