Even before the red carpet rolled out, this year’s Met Gala found itself in the middle of a controversy that few expected.
The New York Post reported that staff at the Metropolitan Museum of Art reportedly discovered hundreds of bottles placed inside the venue ahead of the event. Many of them appeared to be filled with urine, though some were later labelled as fake, made using water and colouring.
The stunt wasn’t random. It was part of a protest aimed at Jeff Bezos, one of the event’s high-profile co-chairs this year.
The group behind the action, which calls itself “Everyone Hates Elon," said the idea was to highlight long-standing complaints about working conditions at Amazon.
For years, there have been allegations that some warehouse workers feel pressured to skip breaks, with reports of employees urinating in bottles during long shifts. Amazon has previously acknowledged challenges around working conditions, while also saying it has taken steps to address them.
The protest leaned directly into that narrative.
Some of the bottles reportedly carried labels like “Boycott the Bezos Met Gala," while one display was even described as a “VIP toilet," mocking the contrast between luxury fashion and worker conditions.
The messaging didn’t stop inside the museum. In the days leading up to the gala, similar protest visuals appeared across New York, including projections on buildings and posters calling for a boycott.
Online, reactions have been mixed.
Some people claimed the event was shocking yet effective in its ability to bring attention to a problem that would otherwise be overlooked. Others thought it went too far, saying it was not necessary or even offensive.
It certainly hasn’t helped the controversy.
Met Gala is regarded as one of the most prestigious events in the fashion world, with each ticket costing thousands of dollars and celebrity attendees from all industries. That contrast, between extreme wealth and worker-related concerns, is exactly what the protest was trying to highlight.
At the same time, the incident has also pulled attention to something more unexpected: the behind-the-scenes reality of the event itself. With elaborate outfits that are often difficult to manage, even basic things like taking a bathroom break can become complicated for attendees.
