Bodoland Peoples' Front disturbs BJP's winning streak in Assam BTC polls
The BJP's winning streak in Assam's Bodoland has ended, as the party secured only five seats in the recent Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) polls. The Bodoland Peoples' Front (BPF) made a strong comeback, winning 28 of the 40 seats. Despite contesting separately, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma declared the BPF's victory as an NDA win.
The ruling BJP's winning streak in Assam's Bodoland has been broken with the party winning only five seats in the recently-held Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) polls. In the 2020 polls, BJP had won nine seats. The party has been winning almost all the elections since 2014. This time, the Bodoland Peoples' Front (BPF) returned to power in BTC winning 28 of the 40 seats. The United Peoples' Party-Liberal (UPPL), which was ruling the outgoing council in alliance with the BJP, got seven seats.
All the three parties had contested the 2025 council polls separately. BTC accounts for 15 assembly seats. Bodo votes are a determining factor in at least 10 assembly seats outside BTC area. Assam, which has 126 assembly seats, is going to assembly polls early next year.
After its good performance in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP formed the government in Assam in 2016. It romped back to power in 2021. In the last 10 years, the BJP has won all the elections in Assam. The 2020 election to the 40-member council had resulted in a fractured mandate with the BPF emerging as the largest party with 17 seats. However, the BJP and UPPL, supported by the Gana Suraksha Party, took over power. The only Congress member in the council joined the BJP.
BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary is likely to be sworn in on October 5 as the council's chief executive member.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently called Mohilary "our partner" and called it a victory for the NDA.
Sarma had run a marathon campaign and addressed several rallies on the BJP's poll plank of development. Sarma had said, "Hagrama's win is NDA's victory. The BTC results mean that all the 40 BTC seats are in NDA's hands. So, now one can gauge how well we will perform in the 15 assembly seats of Bodoland in the 2026 assembly polls".
BTC is a Sixth Scheduled Council under the Constitution of India. In 2006 and 2011, the BPF was part of the Congress-led government in Assam. In 2014, before the Lok Sabha polls, the party parted ways with the Congress. In 2021, it fought assembly polls in alliance with the Congress. It later started supporting the NDA in the state assembly.
