Bobby Deol Confirms Dharmendra Lives With First Wife Prakash Kaur, Says 'Hema Malini Has Her Own Bungalow'
Few stars in Indian cinema have lived lives as dramatic off-screen as on it, and Dharmendra's story is one of them. The legendary actor, who redefined charm and heroism on the silver screen, has had an equally eventful personal journey — one filled with love, complexity, and emotional endurance.
A Journey from Punjab to Stardom
Dharmendra arrived in Mumbai from Punjab as a young, married man, dreaming of making it big in films. Fame came soon enough, transforming not just his own destiny but also the lives of his family. His first wife, Prakash Kaur, found herself adjusting to a completely new world — from a quiet, traditional upbringing to the glamour and chaos of a superstar's life.
Their life together was soon tested by circumstances of the heart. Dharmendra's love story with actress Hema Malini, which began on the sets of Tum Haseen Main Jawaan in 1970, became one of Bollywood's most talked-about romances. Despite opposition from Hema's family, the two eventually married in 1980.
Two Homes, One Heart: The Dharmendra-Hema-Prakash Equation
Dharmendra's second marriage inevitably created a rift within the family. Hema Malini continued to live separately, in her own bungalow, while Dharmendra remained with Prakash Kaur and their four children — Sunny, Bobby, Ajeeta, and Vijeta.
Their daughter Esha Deol later revealed that she didn't meet Prakash Kaur until she turned 30. Yet, through the years, both families have maintained a sense of distance marked by mutual respect and acceptance.
In a recent interview with ABP Live, Dharmendra's younger son, Bobby Deol, shed light on his parents' current life together. Contrary to assumptions that his father lives alone, Bobby clarified that Dharmendra and Prakash Kaur continue to stay together at their farmhouse in Khandala.
Bobby Deol on His Parents' Life at the Farmhouse
When asked about his father's emotional social media posts that sometimes seem melancholic, Bobby said, “My mum is also there. They're both at the farm in Khandala right now. Papa and Mummy are together; he just gets a little dramatic. They love being at the farmhouse. They're also old now, and being at the farmhouse is relaxing for them. The weather is nice, the food is nice. Papa has made a paradise out there."
He further explained that his father has always been an expressive person, unafraid to share his feelings publicly, “Papa is very emotional. He's very expressive. Sometimes he goes overboard, and I ask him why he wrote what he wrote or said what he said, and he tells me that he was just following his heart," Bobby added.
Bobby Deol on His Mother, Prakash Kaur
In the same conversation, Bobby opened up about his mother, who has mostly stayed away from the limelight, “You don't hear about my mother much because people don't usually ask us about her," he said. “She's the strongest woman I've ever met in my life. She's had a very tough journey. She came from a small village and had to adjust to city life as the wife of a superstar. It wasn't easy."
Bobby also credited his mother's resilience for much of his father's success, “I am what I am because of my wife, and it is the same with my father. It is because of my mother's support that my father became a big star," he said warmly.
A Marriage That Withstood Time
Dharmendra and Prakash Kaur married in 1954 when the actor was just 19 years old. Over seven decades later, their bond continues quietly, strengthened by shared history, family, and endurance. Earlier this year, Bobby Deol marked their 71st wedding anniversary with a rare photo of his parents together — a testament to a love that, despite its trials, has endured the test of time.
Hema Malini on Her Unique Relationship with Dharmendra
In contrast, Hema Malini has always spoken with grace about her unconventional marital arrangement. In an earlier interview with Lehren Retro, she admitted that their separate living situation “just happened" and wasn't a deliberate choice, “Nobody wants to be like that; it happens automatically. Every woman wants to have a husband, children, like a normal family. But somewhere, it went out of the way," she said. “I am not feeling bad about it. I am happy with myself. I have my two children, and I have brought them up very well."
Prakash Kaur's Grace and Strength
A year after Dharmendra's marriage to Hema Malini, Prakash Kaur publicly defended her husband in an interview with Stardust. Her words reflected both strength and self-awareness, “Why only my husband? Any man would have preferred Hema over me," she had said. “How dare anyone call my husband a womaniser when half the industry is doing the same thing? He may not be the best husband, though he is very good to me, but he is certainly the best father. His children love him a lot. He never neglects them."
A Legacy of Love and Imperfection
Dharmendra's personal life remains one of Bollywood's most layered stories — one that defies convention and yet celebrates endurance, respect, and the ability to coexist with complexity. From Prakash Kaur's quiet strength to Hema Malini's grace, and Bobby Deol's emotional admiration, the family's journey stands as a reminder that even in the world of stardom, love often takes imperfect but lasting forms.
