‘Block The Noise’: Lakshya Sen Talks Patience & Process After Australian Open Win
Star Indian men's singles shuttler Lakshya Sen's last title had come at the Syed Modi International in December. That was followed by surprising first-round exits at the Malaysia and India Open and a second-round exit at the Indonesia Masters. Lakshya gave his fans back home some hope when he reached the quarterfinals of the All England, but that ended in a straight-games defeat to sixth-seed Li Shi Feng.
Lakshya didn't have any performance of note for the next four months, before he finished semifinalist at the Macau Open. He followed it up with a runner-up finish at the Hong Kong Open, a quarterfinal finish at the Denmark and Hylo Opens, a semifinal finish at the Japan Open and all of it culminated in a title at the Australian Open on Sunday, November 23.
Lakshya started as the favourite against a lower-ranked Yushi Tanaka and played like one, to win the match 21-15, 21-11 and win his first title in 11 months. He followed it up with a ‘blocking the noise' celebration.
“Throughout the year, especially when I was not doing well, there were a lot of doubts in my mind. People had different opinions about my training, the tournaments I played, everything and I respect that," Lakshya said while replying to a query from News18 Sports during a media interaction.

“But for me, it was important to block out the noise and believe in myself. I told myself that if it takes time to start winning again, then it takes time. I did not want to rush into chasing a title the very next week," Lakshya added.
The 2021 World Championships bronze medallist shuttler said that he had to trust his processes even when he couldn't extract results from the slew of tournaments he was playing.
“I had to quiet the doubts, stay patient and trust that I was on the right path even if the results were not showing yet. Sometimes your mind drifts to the past, what did not work, or to the future, what might go wrong," Lakshya said.

“I tried to stay in the present: focus on the next match, the next training session, the next gym session. Do that well and let everything else go. Just block the noise and do what matters now, is what I thought," Lakshya added.
