Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Maruti Suzuki's manufacturing facility in Ahmedabad today, August 26, to mark a landmark moment for India's electric mobility push. At the Hansalpur plant, he inaugurated the local production of hybrid battery electrodes and officially launched the export of Maruti's first global battery electric vehicle (BEV), the e-VITARA, to more than 100 countries, including advanced markets like Japan and parts of Europe.
These strides signal India's growing leadership in sustainable automotive manufacturing.
PM Modi described the event as a pivotal day in India's pursuit of self-reliance and its journey toward becoming a green mobility powerhouse.
“Today is a special day in India's quest for self-reliance and being a hub for green mobility. At the programme in Hansalpur, e-VITARA will be flagged off. This Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) is made in India and will be exported to over a hundred nations. In a big boost to our battery ecosystem, production of hybrid battery electrodes will also commence at a plant in Gujarat," PM Modi said on X (formerly Twitter).

Maruti's e-VITARA will be manufactured in India and sent to over 100 countries
With this launch, Maruti Suzuki has officially made India the global manufacturing hub for its electric vehicles.
The e-VITARA, unveiled earlier this year, will be assembled at the Hansalpur plant and shipped to destinations worldwide, demonstrating India's growing capabilities in high-tech, sustainable auto manufacturing.
India begins local production of hybrid battery electrodes
In a boost to the domestic battery industry, PM Modi also inaugurated the production of hybrid battery electrodes at the TDS Lithium-Ion Battery plant, a joint venture between Toshiba, Denso, and Suzuki.
This facility will manufacture roughly 80 per cent of the battery components locally, a major step toward Aatmanirbhar Bharat in clean energy technology.
Key features of the Maruti e-VITARA make it a standout EV
The e-VITARA is a compact electric SUV with a futuristic design and modern features. It offers two battery options, 49 kWh and 61 kWh, with a driving range of up to 500 km per charge. The power output ranges from around 142 to 172 bhp, depending on the battery pack.
The SUV is packed with tech, including a 10.25-inch touchscreen, wireless connectivity, ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, and Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), an industry first for Maruti.
Safety features also include 7 airbags, electronic stability control, and a 360-degree camera setup.
Price and launch schedule in India
The e-VITARA is expected to launch in India around September this year, with prices estimated between Rs 17 lakh and Rs 22.5 lakh.

In FY25, Maruti Suzuki sold 19.01 lakh units domestically and exported over 3.32 lakh vehicles globally, as per NDTV.
The e-VITARA's production marks the next phase in the company's expansion into EVs, backed by its substantial manufacturing footprint with a capacity of 2.6 million units across four plants.
