BHU launches 121 free online courses on Swayam for skill development. Apply now
Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has announced the launch of 121 credit-ready online courses for the Institutes of National Importance (INI) under the SWAYAM initiative for the JanuaryâApril 2026 academic session.
These courses are set to begin from January 26 and February 16, 2026, and are available to all learners interested in advancing their academic and professional skills.
The newly launched courses from BHU include 71 starting in January 2026, spanning Sciences, Engineering, Management, Medicine, Education, Humanities, Social Sciences, Law, and interdisciplinary studies.
This broad selection reflects BHU's effort to make higher education more accessible and relevant for a wide range of students.
SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) is a government-backed project by the Ministry of Education designed to deliver free, quality online education to anyone interested in learning.
Alongside BHU, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) will offer 48 courses starting January 26, 2026, covering subjects from Arabic to Zoology.
Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) has also joined, with two offerings in Defence and Strategic Studies and Forensic Accounting. Interested students can explore and enrol in these courses via the SWAYAM online portal.
Dr Ashutosh Mohan, National Coordinator, INIâSWAYAM, Ministry of Education, Government of India, highlighted the significance of this expansion: “This is a big step forward in terms of access, flexibility, and quality. BHU will make sure that the INIâSWAYAM courses are in line with the spirit of NEP 2020 by being interdisciplinary, focused on getting students skilled, and open to all motivated students.”
Dr Mohan also noted that two internationally co-developed courses will be part of the INI-SWAYAM offerings, strengthening the global relevance and quality of the program.
BHU's collaboration with the SEPT Competence Centre at the University of Leipzig, Germany, has led to two new academic programs: Digital Marketing and Branding for Start-ups, and Foundation of Digital Entrepreneurship.
These target areas such as customer discovery, media strategies, idea validation, compliance, and market entry for first-time founders.
Several offerings are provided in Hindi or in a bilingual format to remove language barriers and enable more students to benefit from the program.
The university's approach is closely aligned with the priorities of NEP 2020, focusing on interdisciplinary content and skill development.
Students interested can visit the SWAYAM portal (swayam.gov.in/INI) to explore available courses and enrol as per their academic interests and goals.
The platform is accessible to all without any cost.
