Bharat Bandh LIVE: Trade unions take to streets across States amid nationwide strike against Centre’s ‘anti-worker’ policies
Members of various trade unions hit the streets in parts of Jharkhand during the ‘Bharat Bandh’ on Thursday (February 12, 2026).
Banking, insurance and coal sectors have been affected by the strike, Bank of India (BOI) Employees’ Union State deputy general secretary Umesh Das said. Left parties and the Congress have also extended their support to the strike.
“The new labour codes have reduced job security, weakened legal safeguards and increased employers’ freedom to hire, adversely affecting the rights and interests of workers,” state Congress general secretary Rakesh Sinha said.
CPI(ML)L State secretary Manoj Bhakt alleged that the four labour codes were “a direct attack on the rights of the working class”.
“The laws are a conspiracy to render workers helpless in the hands of corporate houses and capitalists. The real objective of these labour codes is to eliminate permanent employment, promote contract jobs, and increase working hours,” he claimed. — PTI
Over 25,000 civilian employees working with defence establishments across Madhya Pradesh reported to work an hour late in support of the nationwide trade union strike, the All-India Defence Employees Federation (AIDEF) said.
More than 25,000 civilian workers posted at six ordnance factories in the State, the 506 Army Base Workshop, the Central Ordnance Depot and Military Engineer Services reported for duty an hour late as a mark of protest, AIDEF president S.N. Pathak told PTI over the phone.
“We could not observe a complete daylong strike as defence production and related work fall under the essential services category,” he said. Instead of reporting at 8 a.m., the workers started duty at 9 a.m., Mr. Pathak added.

As part of the All-India Strike called by central trade unions, a massive protest march was organised under the leadership of CPI and AITUC.
The rally commenced from the Ambedkar Statue at the GVMC Zonal Office and proceeded to the Market Centre, as well as other zonal areas, including Madhurawada, to protest against the four labour codes, the reduction in MGNREGS funds, and the Electricity Amendment Bill 2025.

A nationwide strike called by central trade unions failed to evoke any response in West Bengal as vehicles plied normally, and State government and private offices recorded usual turnout.
Employees and teachers from Central and State civil services, workers’ groups from central and state public sector undertakings, and independent trade unions also supported the bandh call.
Private and State-run vehicles plied normally in Kolkata and other districts, while schools remained open.

The nationwide strike drew a mixed response in Goa, with banking operations affected while essential services remained undisrupted.
Nationalised banks and offices of many insurance companies remained shut in the coastal state.
All India Trade Union Congress Secretary Suhas Naik told PTI that industrial units across various places in Goa were partially affected.
“Labour unions shut down the work in different industrial estates as a mark of solidarity to the strike call,” he said.
Mr. Naik said there was no impact on essential services. “The public transport system worked without any problem,” he said.

Daily travel, governance, public service delivery, and commercial activities in Kerala sputtered to a halt in the first hours of the 24-hour nationwide general strike called by trade unions on Thursday (February 12, 2026).
At least 12 national trade unions are protesting against the Central government’s “anti-worker and patently pro-corporate” labour codes. They have demanded their immediate rollback.
Kerala faces significant disruptions as a nationwide general strike halts transport, services, and commerce over labor code protests.
As the Joint Committee of Trade Unions will go on a general strike in Karnataka on Thursday, demanding the repeal of the four labour codes, among other things, more than one lakh industrial workers are expected to participate in the strike across the State.
The numbers may exceed two lakh workers, as the unorganised sectors have extended support to the strike, claimed trade unions.

The Joint Committee of Trade Unions and the State-led United Struggle, Karnataka, have called for a nationwide strike on February 12 to demand the repeal of the four labour codes and withdrawal of several proposed and existing policies affecting workers and farmers.
Addressing press persons in Hubballi on February 9, Mahesh Pattar, state secretary, Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), said the strike is being organised jointly by workers and farmers’ organisations. He alleged that the four labour codes will weaken labour protections, restrict the right to strike, dilute social security measures, and favour corporate interests. He also opposed the proposed VB-G RAM G scheme, claiming it will undermine rural employment.
